Hey Guys,

I have a quick question on how to do something. I have never fiberglassed before but my brother has and he is willing to help me. However, I just wanted to get on here and get a few ideas or maybe even some steps!

I bought a single 10" sub woofer box for my Alpine Marine Sub that I wanted to install into the boat underneath a seat. However, right now it's carpeted and normal MDF which I know does not like water! My question is can I just epoxy over the carpet and then sand it down and paint it? What products should I use?

Thanks guys for the help in advance! iBoats rocks! :)

Hey Kyle,

If possible I would rip the carpet off, sand, and paint with epoxy paint... good to go! If you wanna glass, you could soak with poly resin, and cover with 2 layers of CSM, sand, and paint color of choice and call it good!

^^ Yup ^^ :) .. Best bet right there..

Or..if there is too much glue and will become a pain.. you could make your own :D .

That way you could epoxy coat in inside as well.

Does it have a port in it ? or is it just an enclosed box.. ?

Re: Fiberglassing a pre-built speaker box

Hey guys thanks for the responses!

It is just a sealed box! I could have built one, I should have probably but I figured for the 30 bucks it cost for it I would be okay. I'll def strip the carpet off, when you say epoxy paint, what kind would you recommend? Is that different from Resin?

Sorry still new to the terms used in fiberglassing LOL! Give me a motor and I kind do wonders, give me a fiberglass project and I can make it it sink!

Do you care about the finish of your box ? .. or is it just to seal it up for water intrusion ?

An alternate method would be to go to a fabric store and buy a yard of Marine Vinyl ..wrap and tack over your carpet.

This would at least give you some time to gather some scrap wood to build a Woofer Box that is glassed and finished Custom fit the way you want it :) ..

I'd coat it in some el cheap fiberglass resin, thinned slightly with acetone. Sand, bondo. Apply 3 coats of Interlux Brightside. It will look like a high-end fiberglass unit for 1/50th the price, and be protected as MDF is going to get from moisture without coating the inside of the box as well.

If the boat is stored on the water, and the box is outside and ported, the MDF may still deteriorate from the inside out over time.

I assume your talking about poly resin.....it's worthless without glass....it will just crack and thinning it will only make it weaker

You can coat the inside of the box through the woofer hole. Remove the woofer and you have a 10inch hole to reach in and coat the inside. :)
