well,
After reading about the grady white and its fuel tank issues i decided to take a better look at ours, havent really looked at it all that much, i only opened it up once to drain the old fuel, which was fine, and not discoloured. Anyways, i opened it up the other day at the pickup fitting, and looked inside with a flashlight, and it turns out the tank is fibreglass. Is this good or bad? it has no leaks, because i just emptied it not long ago, and before that i never smelled or saw any trace of fuel. Should i just leave it to its business?

The boat is a 1974 Carter Safari.

Re: fibreglass fuel tank...

Are you the original owner, it might be a replacement tank, I thought they used alum tanks.

Glass is as good as the resin they use, theres special fuel resistant resins for that purpose. Sure its not nylon?

There's a lot of scuttlebutt about ethanol dissolving fiberglass fuel tanks, sending the resin downstream.

no, i am not the original owner, it may be replacement, the guy i bought it from did say the stringers and transom were redone 8 years ago. Maybe the fuel tank was done too?

im restoring the boat. the only thing i am sure is that its not metal or aluminium, it looks like fibreglass. i have heard about the ethanol thing aswell. Its held up this long, so either it is about to go(knock on wood), or its not going to go...
