What is you all's thoughts on filesharing? Are you for or against it? I think that the RIAA needs to learn to embrace this new technology rather than fight it. When you download a file from somewhere like Kazaa, you don't even know what you are getting. Some are low quality recordings from various sources, Some are viruses, and some aren't even named right. I wouldn't mind paying a small fee of say $10.00 a month to download mp3's as long as I know that what I'm getting is high quality, non virus infected, and correctly named music. They're fighting this just as the movie industry fought vcr's when they came out. It's costs a heck of a lot less to send a file over the internet digitally than it does to produce all those CD's. Also, look at the crap they're putting out these days. Who wants to buy a cd about "poppin a cop" and "Yo Yo I smacked my B@#$h up." It's apalling that they would even put their name on this crap. CD's are way to overpriced anyway. Not to mention the fact that like 95-98% of the money from the cd sales goes into the pockets of these fat cats at the RIAA. The bands don't make hardly any money off of cd sales. They lead you to think that without cd sales a band would starve. It is from concerts that bands make most of their money. I think the reason the RIAA is fighting this so hard is that they know the bands will realize they don't need the labels anymore. That being said, they will lose the bands and their power of practically forcing new bands into believing that without being signed they can't be successful. Exposure is what makes a band successful, not cd sales. Another thing, how many of you people out there who are against filesharing have ever used a vcr to record a football game or other tv show? C'mon think about it. What is the differnce. Technically you were illegally copying copyrighted material. What about those of you who have ever recorded an audio tape for a friend. Or recorded a friends cd onto an audio tape so you could have it. Or even better yet. How many of you have recorded a song off of the radio. Go ahead, don't be afraid. Admit it. Are they now gonna be allowed to come into our homes and sue us for our "illegally copied tapes." Think about it! Why is it that they are attacking only this medium used to copy music. They're going after Napster and Kazaa and the like. Why shouldn't Sony sue itself. They sell mp3 players, tapes, cdr's, and cd recorders. Therefore, they are aiding and abetting music "pirates." This all sickens me. Also, the broadband companies need to get involved as well. Don't they know that the only reason people pay that outrageous internet bill is so they can download music. DUH it's not to hard to realize that soon they will be hurting. Then comes the CDR manufacturers, then mp3 player manufacturers, then CD recorder manufacturers, the list goes on and on. Wake up! WATCH this closely. The RIAA IS NOT A GOVERNMENT AGENCY. DON'T let them act as one. Don't give in to their BRAINWASHING to make you think that it is stealing if you download music. I guarantee you that they themselves have at one point in time or another have copied copyrighted material. They are fighting a moot point. They will NEVER WIN!! As long as music can be PLAYED, it can be COPIED!! ;) I just had to get this out. Thanks for listening. Enlighten me with your thoughts and challenges.

PS: I'm known here by another name but I don't want anyone mad at me. ;)

Re: File sharing

Do I use them? No. Why not? Got enough things going on in my life. I also have radio (free), and 300 LP's and 400 CD's i bought before any of this was possible. Enough I think.

There are several legal pay download sites out there. One that offers 2 options. 1--downloadable but not burnable, for a small fee. 2-- downloadable AND burnable to cd/dvd, for a little bit more. And some offer unlimited downloads for a flat $ fee per month.

Re: File sharing

I love Mp3s i bought a cd player that plays them as well regular cds. the big benefit is i was able to fit 166 songs on one cd. plug that cd in and i am good to go for a couple days. plus i could pick and choose my favorite songs. but as far as free file sharing goes. it is probably not right. i would also rather pay a little fee if i was garaunteed that the files i downloaded were virus free and good cd quality mp3s.

Re: File sharing

Hey, Rick.

Think about something.

I don't know what you do for a living, but I taught and wrote at least part of the time. The people who attended my classes and seminars paid for my teaching and the people who read my writing paid for the material they read. That was a good part of my income. It raised my 4 children.

I worked hard and long to prepare and finish my work.

All of my work was copyrighted by me or by someone who bought the right to copy and sell it. That is what Copyright law is for; to protect the creator of material from thieves.

Suppose someone popped up and advertised "Attend JB's Troubleshooting Basics Seminar, FREE!!, or offered "FREE copies of JB's Vocational Educator's Handbook".

Suppose you busted your butt to do a masterpiece of whatever you do and someone found a way to get it free, without paying you for it. What would you think about that?

Stealing someone elses work without paying for it is stealing, plain and simple. "Everybody doing it" or "everybody getting away with it" does not change that. It is immoral in every culture on Earth.

Your rationalizations amount to, "So I'm stealing and getting away with it, so what?".

So, BOOOO!  . That's what.

Re: File sharing

I'm not to big on music, but when I want to listen to some, I will turn the radio on or go buy some.

This file downloading crap is just so full of viruses, it's not even funny anymore.

I will have to agree, that downloading music is downloading something that someone has a copyright on and is wrong in any sense of the word.

Just my country .02 worth.

Re: File sharing

I used to download a lot of music but not too much anymore. There's a lot of great sites for sharing files but I find myself buying the cd's again. It isn't fair to the band at all but I doubt file sharing will ever stop.

Re: File sharing

I have downloaded a "few" MP3 songs myself, but the bottom line is, that the record companies, right or wrong, do own the music rights and they want to be paid for them.

They blame file sharing for their lower sales, but it more limited buying power (less $$$) and a shift to spending on video games and other non-music items that is really hurting them. Maybe people just think $17 CDs are not worth buying, especially since the record companies stopped producing affordable singles.

The fight against file sharing will make them little money, in the long run.

I agree that many people really have a hard time feeling sorry for the RIAA.

Marty

Re: File sharing

I realize that music is copywrited but what good does it do for a band that can't get played on the radio cause their music is'nt "pop" enuff? How does one find these bands? Hummmm?
If anything the mp3's I've downloaded have caused me to buy MORE cd's than I ever did before... Most of it has to do with my own personal taste in music... I don't like much of the new music that the record companies are putting out... It's pop culture garbage not worthy of even being called music....

I now find alot of groups like Big Sandy and his Flyrite Boys and The Hillbilly Hellcats that I had never heard of before I started searching on Win mx... Yeah, go try to find a a cd by The Paladians or Jack Knife and the Sharps at one of the big stores like Specs or Best Buy... HA! good luck....

I find out who the band/artist is and then, if I like em', I'll find out where to $buy$ their cd's...

Rockabilly Rules, ok...

Re: File sharing

I download music. Just did it today, and will probably do it tomorrow. I dont care if bands dont think its right, they should not be so selfish. I dont really care what any of you think of me for doing it either. I will continue to do it.

Why do I want to go and buy a cd and pay 20.00 for it, when I only like one song off of it? If there was a way to just get the one song off of the cd that I liked, well then I would be willing to pay for that 1 song. Until then I will be happily downloading music.

Re: File sharing

I used to download. Napster was great. I used Lime wire for a while, but there are way to many issues (security, viruses etc) with the gnutnella network.

Lately Ive been going to the media section in our library, and checking out some great CDs at $1 each, and then burning copies for my home stereo, car / portable player use, I also convert those CDs to high quality-first generation MP3s for my iPod and laptop.

Since I have a Mac, I am able to use iTunes. Very quick connection and download. A huge library of songs. 99 cents each.

Re: File sharing

SBN, the legal/pay download site are done with the copyright holders blessing, and everyone gets their cut.

And the listen only option lets you explore different genres and artists, for a smaller fee.

snapperbait, some new band are providing their music for free, in a copyrighted but for free distribution form. Don't ask me where to find them, but my nephew is involved with one of the bands that does it.
