On my engine there are 3 screws on the Starboard side of engine leg, the top one and the bottom one are same ie; flat screwdriver needed, there is a middle one which is star headed, I noted in Clymer manual referance to a smaller engine not to touch this as a major job is created! I have oil to change but wonder if Bottom to drain, top to fill, Ignore middle one which is star headed? Engine is 1984. thanks for now J.B.D.

Don't touch the middle screw. The top and bottom screws are vent and drain respectively.

After draining fill from the bottom hole until oil comes out the top hole.Replace top screw then insert bottom screw.A little messy but this insures it is full.

Make sure that you use new gaskets on the plugs.

Wonder if the new gaskets are fibre washers? I was going to use PTFE thread tape? J.B.D.

Use new gaskets, Lurcher. Otherwise you are almost sure to get water in the gearbox.

and be aware some of those units use orings instead of gaskets, you cannot mix and match the plugs to the sealing methods. if you do it WILL leak.
over the years there were 3 styles of plugs, one with a flat face that requires a paper type gasket. one that had a raised ridge on the sealing face that used a nylon washer and the plugs with a face groove that use an oring.

then some brilliant monkey made the removal slot a hex that strips easy:) :)

Fine all noted everyone, I will remove top one to see what gasket I need, I have many fibre washers of all sizes left over from car trade and wondered if they would be ok, but the common sense says put it the way Evinrude designed it!Weather here is so cold went out in afternoon to secure cover and hands were numbed in few minutes, snowing, boating is a dream!
