Filler hole?? VP 2.3l 275 Outdrive

Hello Troops,

Quick question, there is a filler port on top of my 275 VP outdrive. What is this for? I have found no mention of it anywhere? Upper right corner!!

lastly, I changed out the both Exhaust/Drive bellows on the drive but found oil in the bellows housing the U-Joints!!
is this normal? Again I can find nothing to cover this.

Service manual for the drive calls it a "hollow bolt", and is sealed with it's own O-ring. Not sure if it's for filling the drive, as the drive actually has a fill port behind the cover with 275 on it. Perhaps the Swedes were offering an alternative way to fill the drive.

Nope, not normal. The seal for the input shaft is most likely shot, and allowing drive oil to leak out into the bellows. You need to get this fixed.

Thats not the fill. If it's like the 270 and 290 it should be a dip stick.

Thats not the fill. If it's like the 270 and 290 it should be a dip stick.

The dipstick is in the center of the cap with a slotted head for a screw driver.
What he's talking about (I think), is the one over-sized bolt with the allen head drive at the top right of the cap (facing the drive) that's participating in holding the cap on the top gear box.

The dipstick is the slotted screw in the middle.

Oh, that! When he said fill port I automatically thought of the centre one. Now that I have re-read it he did say top right corner. :facepalm:
