Filling Gear Oil in Volvo Drive

Good Day Everybody,

I have a 1995 Lund Tyee, 4.3 H.O. and Volvo DP-S drive. I just bought the boat so now I'm going through everything. Quick question, I read in the manual that in order to re-fill gear oil in the drive some Volvo drives may require an adaptor for the gear oil pump.
So, for the Volvo DP-S drive do I need an adaptor for my gear oil pump or will my pump screw into the fill hole on the.
BTW it's one of those generic gear oil pumps that fits in a quart bottle that you get at Cabelas or West Marine or whatever.

Thanks

I had an answer all ready for you but then noticed the year. Are you sure you have a DP-S?

Yep pretty sure, says so on the ID tag, at least the tag stuck to the transom shield inside the boat.
Yeah I've kinda wondered if it might be one of those things where they were using up parts and going from one model year to the next. Cuz according to the 1995 Lund sales brochure there are some things that my boat has that are not listed as options or anything in the brochure. And it's deffinately all ariginal drive and engine, niether have been out of the boat.
So bruceb58, would your answer still apply? Or any body else for that matter.

If we assume that the top and bottom have the same thread... check out the top and see if it fits maybe??

( that prolly doesnt fly on the vovlos... oh well)

Well, if your fill/drain point is behind the props, Volvo has an adapter that threads in there and it has an o-ring to make a good seal. I then added a brass fitting to that so it fits the hose of my pump. Very nice and little oil loss while filling.

Edit: Here it is in use. Not my picture but gives you an idea. It is also useful if you ever need to pressure test your drive.

Re: Filling Gear Oil in Volvo Drive

96 was the first year for the DP-S drive, but it's not uncommon for a 95 boat to have a 96 engine and drive package. The 96 engine package probably came out in late summer, early fall or even later in 95. The boat year is the day the hull is started. So if the hull construction started in December 95, it's a 95 boat. but the engine and drive are 96.

One other note, ALWAYS use new orings on that drain plug, they could get the edge shaved off removing them.

And to add a note to Don's note. Rolling that o-ring over the threads seems like it takes its toll on it. I cover the threads with electrical tape, and then roll the new oring on.

Re: Filling Gear Oil in Volvo Drive

Thanks guys, but I'm starting to get confused. If in fact my drive is a DP-S it does not have the through hub exhaust, the exhaust exits through the hollow anti-ventilation plate just above the props. Also, my gear oil drain/fill hole is on the right front of the gear case just below the center line. Basically like any OMC or Merc.
On the removeable cover on the upper drive (where you get to the shift mechanism and the oil fill vent) the sticker says DP. But the transom shield says DP-S. Oh, and the drive is very light grey, almost dirty white in color and looks like "old style" Volvo, not the Volvo/OMC style.
Is this still a DP-S?? I know I need to get you guys the numbers off the plate that's up by the steering helmet to totally confirm this.
By the way, , Seloc manuals suck!!! It came with the boat so it's all I have and unfortunately Volvo manual down loads are not available here anymore.

Does this look more like what you have? If so, look at the tag shown by the arrow in the picture. It has the model and serial number of the drive on it.

Yep, that is exactly the drive I have. I saw the tag up there too but looks like some of the numbers might be worn a bit, gotta get a little more light on it and whipe it off a bit.
So what year(s) span did Volvo use that drive? Like a said a couple of posts up, that drive isn't evn listed as an option in the 1995 Lund sales brochure.

Sorry for all the questions, I'm new to Volvo. Just want to make sure I know what I'm talking about. :)

Re: Filling Gear Oil in Volvo Drive

The basic design for that drive has been around since the mid 80's, and the mid 90's is when they stopped using them on gas engines. That is when Volvo started using the DP-S type drive instead of the DP (like you have) they did keep using the DP on the 31 and 41/44 series diesel engines.

If you can't find the model of the drive, post the serial number of your engine. I should be able to find out what drive it is if it was registered for warranty properly.

Thanks a lot Don I really appreciat it!! So if I'm reading you correctly I DO NOT have a DP-S, rather I DO have a DP.
They use the DP on with diesel engines? Sheesh, that thing must be built like a brick out house!!

Thanks again.

Pretty much. Keep the gear lube changed yearly, change the bellows every other year and you should never have problems with it.
I do have links to the OEM service manuals, but need to know which exact model you have.

Things like changing bellows is really easy, takes me about 30 minutes. You don't have to remove the whole drive, just the upper gear box to replace the bellows.

Don,
I'll try and get that model number this evening and post it here.

Again, the Seloc manual I have really sucks, they give no information (not that I've seen anyway) on identifying different moddels or anything like that. Kinda makes things difficult.

Once again, I really appreciate all the information, it's truly priceless.

Re: Filling Gear Oil in Volvo Drive

Ok, here are the numbers I got off the drive, from top of the tag to the bottom;
3868008
DP-C1 2,30
No. 3102154013

Just cuz I was there I got the numbers off the engine as well;
4.3GS PMDA
4110110835

Don, hope all these numbers are good, pretty sure it's not the numbers for the Playboy of the month club. :)
If it would be possible for you to pass on the links to the Volvo manuals, well, , , that would just make my day.

Here is the manual for your drive, and here is the engine manuals. You only need #2,3,and 6 engine manuals for your engine.

Re: Filling Gear Oil in Volvo Drive

I got the Drive manual ok but when I clicked on the engine manual I got to the share site thing where you down load the manuals and I got a message to the effect of "The down load you are requesting is invalid". Hope that doesn't mean it's not available....

Thanks again for your help.
