what is the best way to clean off the toon and outdrive....... they both have a very very hard crusty film/scum line on them.
is there a cleaner? I have tried the quarter carwash but it didn't seem to have enough power to break any of it loose.
Thanks in advance

50-50 mix muratic acid and water. Use a pump sprayer to apply. This will get all the organic growth.

You'll probably be left with white chalky crusty stuff. That is a mineral build up. Scraping and sanding is how you get it off. Others have had various luck with toilet bowl cleaners, CLR, etc etc to take it off. Or leave it because it will be back next season ! ! !

I just power-wash it off and scrape any barnacles off with a plastic scraper. Calvinator is right......it will be back next year. If you take the time to clean them off properly, apply a coating of Sharkhide to keep them that way for a few years.

thanks, they are really bad so I do want to do something to make them look a little more presentable. I don't know if I will go all out but maybe, depends how rambunctious I am feeling!

The dollar store sells bottles of a toilet bowl cleaner called the works. I used a yard sprayer to apply it to my toons and it took off the scum and all the rust-colored stain that does not power-spray off. That stuff is awesome, just don't get any on you skin.

If you spray muriatic acid on and use a power washer it will all eventually come off. I've cleaned hundreds of pontoons like this. Sometimes you have to go over it quite a few times but the most acid i think I've ever used on one boat is a little over a gallon.

I would not use the products mentioned above on your outdrive but they will work great on your toons. I would recommend refraining from using Muriatic Acid around anything painted or finished chromes etc. Works great on toons. Watch the over spray.

I used muriatic acid to clean 20 yrs worth of hard water deposits off my outdrive, when nothing else would touch it (including CLR), but be careful! Gloves, glasses, and ventilation required! It will eat exposed Al castings if not rinsed off promptly, and it will rust steel, including stainless. It won't eat paint, but I wouldn't be surprised if it stained some types/colors. I used full strength, and the factory Mercruiser paint showed no damage. Nasty stuff, but sometimes the only thing that works.
