I have a 1959 Johnson QD-20 (10hp), and I need to change the fuel filter. It's the one inside the glass bowl. No problems getting the glass bowl off, but I was expecting the filter to just slip out. It may be stuck from all the gunk, but I just wanted to make sure it doesn't screw off or anything weird before I go at it with pliers. Any tricks to getting these off? The arrow points to the filter.

That plate holding it on screws off.

Um, what plate? LOL. Do you mean the part just above where the filter is peeking out of, where the glass bowl retainer is attached?

My aftermaqrket service manual indicates J/E type 1 carb
has a round nut with a serated edge that simply tightens against the end of the filter.

after you unscrew that thumbscrew there's a rubber seal on the upper end and it may be swelled some. It should come down with a some "wigglin'". Marineengine dot com has diagrams for your motor if you want to look at a schematic...your year..model no...page 6..part numbers are listed on the following

As a side note, I was thinking of eliminating that filter, and just use an inline glass filter. Is that acceptable?

Yeah your arrow is pointing at the plate or nut that holds the filter up. IT needs to be unthreaded, then wiggle the filter free. Give it a good cleaning in carb cleaner and blow it out with compressed air.

Got it. There was a plate and screw. Once I knew that, it was off in seconds. Thanks guys.

For future reference, here's the plate that was holding it on;
