got an alpha 1 gen 2 merc and im just wondering if I need the fin anode on the lower unit or not. I do have an anode there but its just flat. What is the purpose of the fin?? Not even sure it would fit because it might hit the prop. Thanks

Re: Fin anode

If you have power steering you don't need the fin. The purpose is to improve steering by reducing prop torque.

They make 2 different sizes to accomodate different props.

Re: Fin anode

Fin: Acts as small rudder to offset some prop thrust (which isn't straight).

Fin: I believe that boats with power steering don't need 'em as much as boats without power steering.

Anode: well, you need that either way, but see above for whether it should have a fin

Re: Fin anode

Its a trim anode, also heard it called a 'tang'. I didnt have one on my Alpha drive but I addded one and it really helped to reduce the steering wander I had while going slow.

Re: Fin anode

I do have power steering. Maybe I will try it and see if it helps any because it does wander pretty bad when going slow. If it doesnt work Ill cut it off and keep the flat part. thanks

Re: Fin anode

The fin will NOT, help with wandering. It is a trait of v-hulls. Tabs can halo but not the fin above the prop.

I know Im not tripping that adding the trim anode reduced my wander. 23' shallow V hull Alpha 1.

The wandering is a side effect of having a deep V and an I/o. They are prone to wander. As said above tabs will help. Alot! When I put themon mine it was an amazing difference.

Re: Fin anode

This thread got all confounded! Apparently, some didn't read the whole thing and got off on a tangent.

We are talking about engine trim tabs to control propeller torque.

NOT talking about boat trim tabs, smart tabs or deep-V wander.
