Hello again,

I finally was able to change my thermostat out today. Boy I am so glad I did. When I took thermostat housing apart one of the thermostats was coroded so bad that it was coroded to the open side luckily. The other one was coroded but was still usable. Anyway the job was not so bad I used 3M Marine grade silicon sealant clear to seal the gaskets nothing else. It said it was good for gasket adhesive. Will I have any problems with it leaking using that type of adhesive? I put it on both sides of each gasket and tihtened the 3 bolts done and put the two water hoses back on and tightened the clamps. I still have one more big job to do is to replace the water pump.

What 3M marine sealent did you use? was it 5200? or was it 4200 or any of the other sealent? Just a tip, you can use permatex high temp gasket maker for jobs like this. when I ordered the Johnson gasket sealent all it was, was a small 4oz bottle of permatex aviation gasket sealent. The stuff works great for all kinds of gasket reparair. As for the stuff you used I'm not sure if it is high temp resistant, even so you should not have really any problems with it as long as it was 5200 becasue you want it to hold water. I think you will be fine.

Michael Moore

If it was 5200, be prepared for a tough job when it comes time for another change. I don't use anything on the thermostats except the gasket, it will seal just fine.

yes it if was 5200 you will have a tuff time getting the cover off the thermostat. I agree just use a new gasket next time and you will not have problems, however Johnson recomends the use of a gasket sealing compond.
