This is my outboard, a 140hp VRO. Can anyone help me with its vintage and if so does it have any typical troubles inherent in it or just the usual stuff ????
Thanks,
Paul.

Looks like my '85. If you post the model and serial nos., we can tell you with certainty. Look on the port mounting bracket.

See? Jim was right again!

Johnson (J), 140 (hp), T (trim), L (long shaft or 20" shaft) 1985 (CO) and it was the one built right before 67036831.

Should be a small bore V4 looper.

Re: Finally found a photo

Great. Thanks for the info. Now you have taken me to another question.
Small bore, big bore ????? what are the differences ???
I am sure it is a 90 degree V4 looking at the "V" angle of the cylinders. Can you also explain the "looper" thing to me again. I thought that I read somewhere that the "loopers" were at the 60 degree "V"
One more thing, are there any known major issues with this one ??? I would just like a heads up to watch for.
You guys are great and thank you again.

Re: Finally found a photo

Looper refers to loop charged .

More efficient at fuel scavenging then a crossflow.

Meaning how the intake and exhaust ports are configured, and the route fuel takes during combustion.

Looper , fuel goes up one side of cylinder and down the other, pushing exhaust ahead of it.

Crossflow uses piston dome to route fuel , and pushes exhaust out opposite side of cylinder.

If that helps any.

Re: Finally found a photo

It's a great engine ... lotsa grunt and very strong. I ran mine for over 800 hours w/o any major problems, before I sold it. Zero significant issues over almost 20 years.

Re: Finally found a photo

Thanks for that Jim. It seems very strong, willing and starts first turn of the key each time. Blows a little smoke when first starting up but settles in a minute or so. I think that this is the better option having a little much oil at start up rather than not enough. It just pours cooling water out of the back when running with me on the tube or ski's as I can watch it well from there. Does not pour out too fast when putt putting out of the marina but is not too hot either. Family just love this 17ft Doral with this motor. We have had so many hours of fun so far with it. Now we have to invest in a little kicker for the times when we fish. Thats for next season though.
Thanks again and all info and opinions are more than welcome.
Paul.
