Well finally after getting some petrol and oil and buying a new truck battery i finally started up my mercury. Its an old old Mercury Thunderbolt!
a 650 65hp 4 cylinder 2 cycle engine!

Anyway i tried starting it with choke on full and off both ways it just kinda started then choked up. I took covers off and i pulled the little metal thing that you pull up when you start it.. Started in 1 second of turning the key... What going on? why won't the motor start without the metal plunger being pulled up :(

Anyways after i started it, it was **** ****ing loud (first time i heard a boat engine on land)and the boat was kinda smoking out of the exaust (heaps like a disel truck smoking) i udnerstand its a 2stroke but should it smoke that much or does it just need everything regulated in it?.. Also near the exaust it every few seconds the whole motor would jolt like the muffler is backfiring or something is that normal? like it sounds like a 2 stroke motorcross bike clicking every few seconds :)

You think the engine is just up for a service? The motor hasn't run for about 2 years because the dude i bought it off had a car accident and conked his back.

Anyway thanks

Typically a motor that has been sitting needs the fuel system gone over from tank to carbs.
I reccomend you dont run anymore until
system is checked. If there is gunk in the system it will get everywhere.
Im guessing the plunger is a manual choke.
See what moves when you move it.
If you keep the motor you can get reprint manuals at Grubbs Marine at:www.oldmercs.com

That kicking, puffing effect that you described is known as "sneezing" and it's caused by the carburetors being too lean. It's also very hard on the reed valves. The fact that the motor sat unused for two years is further indication that the carburetors need to come off for a thourough cleaning. You CANNOT fix the problem without removing and disassembling the carbs! Do a quick search for "carburetor cleaning" and you are likely to find more information than you ever thought possible on the subject. This board had a thread just in the last day or so pertaining to exactly this subject.

One other thing: REPLACE THE WATER PUMP IMPELLER!
