OK guys i just called mercurys home office and the 1996 force 75hp engines low idle screw on top of the carburator is set a 1 and a half turns out from lightly seated!! So i am going to move mine back to factory settings and HOPE FOR THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! MAN i feel relieved to know the factory settings on that engine!!! I was worried i was running my engine either too lean/rich! I currently have it on 2 turns out so i am going to move it back!!!!!!! Hopefully it runs good!!!

Thanks PPL!!

*Always open to suggestions on this if anyone would like to comment!!

Too rich is always better than too lean.

... i believe he was saying had the turn out from seated been less than 1 you'd be shopping for a new O/B. you'll determine your own result from factory setting to where it is now by how it performs.

I think what rosco is trying to say is if you are running your engine rich it will not hurt the engine " other than possible fouled spark plugs". A lean running engine will burn up your pistons over time and also cause possible over heat. Most factory settings are for sea level. If you are not at sea level you should set your air idle mixture to the altitude your at. What i like to do is turn the screw in or out on till you reach the highest possible idle and then turn it out just slightly on the rich side.

There is no factory setting. A starting point is at 1 1/4 turn out then you adjust it till it is right. Chances are if it is set at 2 turns and it runs decent your carb needs to be taken apart and cleaned. With motor running at as slow a speed as possible without it dying in forward gear you want to set that screw to 1 1/4 turn and make very slight adjustments clockwise every 20 seconds or so till it starts to race. Go back the other way till it starts to stumble then find the half way point between the two and maybe an 1/8 extra turn counterclockwise so it is slightly rich.

That mixture valve is very prone to crap contamination. When motor is running and warm at slow speed try turning the screw 5 full turns counter clockwise. Sometimes that will free up the debris that might be partially clogging the carb. If your setting is not noticeable when testing as mentioned above you should have the carb cleaned and rebuilt. Another main reason a Force overheats is partial blockage in the fuel delivery system creating a lean condition.
