I'm posting this here since this is where y'all have read about all my Ford Explorer's problems.

As those that have been following along I've been researching a new small truck. I narrowed it down to the Toyota Tacoma and the Nissan Frontier.

Saturday, I drove both.

Toyota Tacoma
I checked out the Tacoma 4x4 with the TRD Offroad Package. The truck has some nice featured like storage under and behind the rear seats, tie-down system in the bed and an AC outlet in the bed. The first thing I noticed was the seating position. Like I'd read about, it was like sitting near the floor with my legs out in front. For the amount of time I drove it, I was not uncomfortable but I wasn't crazy about it either. The second thing was visibility. Visibility while backing up isn't that good. I think it's partially due to the seating position. The ride and handling were good, the engine felt strong, and it was very quiet.

Nissan Frontier
For the Nissan I drove the LE model. The most striking feature to me was the roof rack. I'll admit I'm not crazy about it. The salesman explained to me that since this model had an electric sunroof, the roofrack had to stay because it was a structural component. You can get them without the roof rack, but no sunroof. The interior was similar to the Toyota except the Nissan had power leather seats (heated too). The seats sit you up a little higher than the Toyota but not quite as truck-like as say my Explorer or a Ranger. Visibility out the back was a little better than the Toyota. It rode and drove just as well. The engine felt strong. It was just a little noisier ride than the Toyota but not by much.

What I want in a truck
I drive a small SUV. I want something SUV-like with a truck bed. I want all creature comforts I can get while still being able to use the truck bed when I want to instead of hooking up my trailer.

Decision
The Toyota is a fine truck. I don't think anyone would go wrong with that truck. However, I decided to go with the Nissan because of the seating/visibility and features that were not available on the Toyota.

4 Wheel Disc Brakes
Leather Seats (Electric and Heated)
Electric Sunroof
XM Radio
6 Disc Changer
Aux audio input

The loaded Nissan will cost about the same as the Toyota too (though resale will be a little lower)

I should have this hooked up by august...
Frontier LE 4x4
Leather
Sunroof
XM
Upgraded Sound System
Towing Package

Now I gotta pick a color!

I looked at all the full size trucks too. The Nissan Titan was my favorite by far. If you're into nice features inside, you can't get more truck for the money than the Titan. The gas mileage would have killed me though. I was also disappointed to see that Consumer Reports gave it a really bad rating in the reliability department. Definitely check it out though if you're in the market. Lots of folks think Consumer Reports is full of crap. I think you'll be surprised how much you'll have to pay for a Chevy/GMC/Toyota that's as nicely equipped compared to the Titan. Admittedly, I didn't look at Dodge Rams.

Did you know I work at a Toyota dealership.........

Shoot me an email I bet I can get you a better deal if your willing to drive it home!!

Di you get a chance to see a Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport? It's all personal preference I guess.

I have an older Tacoma 4 cyl 5 spd 4wd and I love it.

Just FYI there has been a huge migration of Truck owners coming over to the new Tundra.... seems like we are constantly getting rid of "other" brands to the wholesale people.

The Tacoma does not have leather ...... they opted for a better crash and rollover rating, fuel economy, and availability of VSC.

To me ......... I am partial to the Toyota ....... my wife is pushing real hard for me to get her a Prius ;)

Don't get me wrong, the Toyota is a great truck. Until I drove them both I thought I was sure to pick the Toyota. I think the driving position alone was the biggest turn off. I'm 6'1" and would prefer to not feel like I'm sitting on the floor. The Nissan isn't a lot better in that regard, but it is better. The visibility thing is kinda big for me too. I can't hardly see out of my left eye so I can use all the visibility I can get. That's one thing I really liked about my Explorer. The leather, sunroof, XM and other niceties just sealed the deal.

Personally, I think Toyota kinda dropped the ball in that department. The sales guy told me that leather and XM was available in most everything else Toyota made.

I did not drive the Sport but from what I've read, the only significant difference is the suspension. Like I said, the one with off road suspension rode and drove just fine. I do kinda like the hood scoop on the sport though it doesn't actually have any purpose.

They could have better crash and rollover rating, fuel economy, and availability of VSC and still have the luxury features.

its a truck its not supposed to have leather on anything but the steering wheel.:D  as far as satellite radio I prefer Sirius and with the quality of add on units now available I wouldn't pay extra for a factory installed unit.

Yea I hear ya. Part of me wants something that I can open both doors and hose it out but the other part wants something nice. If hooking up the trailer to go to home depot or haul off some trash wasn't a pita, I'd be just as happy in an SUV. :)

That is something I could check into. I have an XM radio in my Explorer. I just though it would be nice to have it built-in so i wouldn't have to look at wires and such. If the XM/Sirius merger goes through, it won't matter which one you have. A decent after-market system with xm, amp, speakers and a small sub would probably cost less and sound better.

There's still part of me that wants to be sitting up in a full sized truck. I've been running 4 and 6 cylinders all my life. Maybe I can justify burning up some gas now that I'm almost 40 and not running the roads all the time. It's less than 10 miles to work too. When I showed the wife the price difference between the full sized and small trucks she started getting interested in the full sized.

And now it's paid for. The title arrived in the mail today. And I'm still enjoying my truck!

Sharp lookin' i. I always wanted a truck but could never justify it. If my '94 2500 Suburban and my '91 Toyota Previa were worth anything, I would trade them off for something like you got. I still need to tow my 20 ft boat though.

I think mine's rated to tow around 9000 pounds. That Suburban ought to do that and then some.

I wish Bob... Now it's her turn. She's been driving her '95 Civic hatchback since it was new. She's about due for something new. But after that it's new boat time!

Oh, it does it alright. It is a 454 with only 44k miles on it. Problem is it only gets 8 mpg while towing and maybe 11 at best on an easy, non towing cruise.
