I've gone through this thing with new fuel tank, lines, battery, etc. I couldnt get it to start forever. finally I had the idea to give it throttle while starting it. It starts and runs above like 25% throttle. Whats going on? thanks for any ideas.

What's your model number, I don't see a 50hp in 1970.

Have you cleaned the carbs? After sitting for five years the gas has probably turned to varnish in the low speed jets. I believe that motor has adjustment screws for the low speed jets. Try adjusting the screws out a little but before you do screw them in until they seat lightly. Count the number of turns in to give you a default setting. Then turn them back out a 1/4 turn or so past the original position.

Im sorry its actually a 1975, I keep mixing up the year. Ive pulled/cleaned the carbs a few times. Put new float pins and needles in them. I only saw one jet in each carb.

Did you remove the welch plugs and clean in behind them?

I havent done anything with welch plugs. What do they do? would they cause this problem?

If that motor sat for that long, you need to do a complete carb o/haul..IMO.
That includes removing the welch plugs (look a bit like frost plugs) and cleaning the passages behind them. A rebuild kit (available at iboats store) will normally include new plugs.

So there are passages in there that I need to clean? is there any way to clean the passages without needing new welch plugs? I wish I had a schematic of the the carb. Since it doesnt have an idle jet, does it just idle off the main jet or is there a little idle passage/hole in the carb that might be clogged?

SWEET ok this is looking good. So I have to remove core plug #5 and clean that out? That is defintely my carb.
Isnt #30 "NEEDLE VALVE slow speed" my air-fuel mixture screw? Please excuse my lack of outboard carb knoweledge.

Yes, #5 is the core plug you need to remove and clean the tiny passages underneath.
Yes, #30 is your slow speed adjustment, lightly seat it and back it out 1 1/4 turn to start and then fine tune it in the water.

I took the carbs off and unscrewed the idle/mixture screws. They are mostly brass with a silver needle on the tip. One of these silver tips is stuck in the carb. Are these supposed to be removable or do I need a whole new needle/screw. Also, how do I remove the core plug to get in there? thanks!

Check the "top secret" file at the top of the thread list. There is a wealth of info in there that is exactly what you need....including "It's been sitting two years, what to do?"

In your case you'll need to read that one twice since your motor has been sitting for 5 years....:D;)
