finding engine information

Hi I have purchased a new to me boat with a mercury 700. I can read the serial number but no online look up that I can find recognizes the number. Can anyone sudjest a site or know how I can get info and year?

What is the serial number? Most sites don't go back past about 1986, and I suspect your engine pre-dates that. I still have the old 'serial number reference' book issues by Merc that goes all the way back to about 1963.
