finding previous boat owners of my boat

i believe im the third owner of my boat, how do i find out who the previous owners were? i just paid boatfax and it didnt tell me anything, it just said make model and year and said it was a safe purchase and took my 20 dollars, like i didn't know the make and model!! LOL i dont care about the 20 dollars but i would like to know who the owners were, cane someone help me?

Unless your Dept of Motor Vehicles or Game Dept makes that information available, then you probably out of luck.

I know when I sell something, I have no desired to publish my information, there is really no reason that anybody needs to know that I owned it several years ago.

Is there a specific reason you want to know who owned it before you?

Even CARFAX does not reveal previous owner's so, you might have to resort to the State where it may have been registered. I am not aware of a system where "joe public" can do such a trace. Maybe a Police agency can?

Most states that I am aware of that information is privacy act protected. Doesn't mean that you can't get it but you usually have to file a request with the registering agency and they will determine if your "need to know" is worthy.

However........ The sure fire way to know the owner's and their information is to purchase brand new!

All my boats (and My dad's) were purchased brand new. Some as far back as 72 years ago. We live in NY. Just out of curiousity I contacted the DMV to see who currently owned the boats in question, if they were still registered, or who the last owner of record was if they weren't.

They wouldn't give me any of that info. Its a lost cause.

i guess that answers my question! i was just curious who might have owned, its a steigercraft which is a commercial boat so i was curious of its history if it was ever used commercially.

Now that be another story. Usually companies names are not privacy act protected. You may be able to do some searching by boat name if you have that with someone else besides DMV. I would have no idea where to start but would think that you could search archives of the authority that oversees whichever type of activity the boat performed (i.e. lobster boat, charter fishing). Just a guess though.

In Florida you can get a list of all previous owners. For less than $20.
I have done so three times in five years. As a private citizen, not a dealer, etc.
This website allows you to look up info on named vessels.
But no prior owner histories.

Those are documented vessels. No help if you'r looking for an ordinary runabout.

Its not public info, its private ownership, you have no "right" to know.

you dont say where you are ,but in ohio,i sent a title search to the department of watercraft .
for two dollars they sent back every body that had owned my boat from the day it left the dealer.

im from connecticut and thanks for all the responses, im going to try dmv and see if its possible to get the info im looking for, i have read articles about old boats and the owner looking back at its history and i thought it would be interesting to see who owned it and what it was used for being its commercial,if i find info i will post it here, thanks all.

I recently boat a used boat from a boat yard, the previous owvers had it there foe years and sold it to the yard. I purchased it, ran it for 20 minutes, and now the yard is claiming it was due to age...
I would like to find the previous owners to find out if they sold it to the yard knowing it had defects.

Any thoughts?

Lets see, you bought a boat from a boat yard, ran it 20 minutes and now are wanting to know if someone knew there was something wrong with it? Sounds like you may have put the cart before the horse, fortunately, most of the time, with work, time and money you should be great to go, boats are like pigs in a poke, you get what you pay for and often times you pay more for what you get..

The motor began to over heat, no alarm went off as well. I had the risers and manifolds cleaned and dipped, Y-pipe redone, and now the motor does not seem to be getting any water inside to cool it (I am thinking water pump) but the boat yard is dragging in working on it. That is why I am wondering if they knew it was going to fail, but was hoping it would happen after I sailed into the sunset away from the yard.
