Re: Firefighters
Man, we are all saddened by the death of firefighters. That stinks. As for the guts and courage, most don't see it as that. It is more of an adrenaline rush. A need to "eat smoke and feel the heat." Sometimes, in my more pensive moods, I think we in the firefighting community get more credit than we deserve.

The other week I came back from a fire and the Mrs was a little ticked since she hadn't seen me for so long, I gave her the usually "it's all about helping others" story and she looked me square in the eyes and said, "People don't get all wide-eyed and excited because the get to help somebody. You love the thrill of the fire." Had to admit that she was right. It is hard work, dangerous work (which is what ticks her off at times - especially when she worries the adrenaline will cause someone to do something unsafe), and the hours stink (especially for volunteers), but it is thrilling, exciting, and you get to help others at the same time. That is why most of us at Station 6 do what we do. Yes, it is for helping others, but we get a rush at the same time.

Try it, join a volunteer fire company and see for yourself. I am sure they will be glad for you help, no matter how much or how little you can do.
