I picked up a 14' Starcraft Kingfisher and trailer. The guy who had the boat before must have had a real small motor because he cut a square out of the transom. Its about 6 inches down and 12 inches wide. Is this a easy fix? Will it still hold the 30hp it was rated for? What can I do to repair this mess? Also like to replace the trim on the transom since he cut it and missing the left rear corner trim piece. Any ideas where to get trim for an aluminum boat?

Re: First Boat General help

Is it possible it was a high transom before that required a long shaft motor? If so. it is now modified for a short shaft, which is considered the "regular" length. I have a 2 hp, 10 hp 25 hp, 30 hp and a 40 hp ( don't ask). All are the same length.
If you do need to put it back to stock, cut a piece of marine plywood to exactly fit the cutout. Cut 2 larger pieces for inside and outside the cutout. seat with 3M 5200 sealant and bolt through the transom using min. 3/8" stainless steel bolts. Use at least 4 bolts. Some would consider aluminium plate on the inner and outer instead of plywood even better.
The trim you may have to hunt for. I'd start with the local metal supplier.
