i have a 77 mercruiser 120 or 140 not sure how to tell but outdrive says 120, anyway i replaced the impeller on the lower unit, now it is acting like it is stuck in gear. when i started it after replacing impeller the prop spun at a high speed and if i try to shift it into gear it stalls the motor. not sure if the motor would have stalled before i changed the impeller though. it was overheating so i started there and seems im about to b finished there. i hate paying a mechanic pls tell me i can fix this without taking it all apart again lol

If it is stuck in gear, your lower shift shaft was probably in reverse when you put it back together. Do the following: Control lever all the way forward. Drop the lower. Turn the lower shift shaft (short splined shaft) all the way clockwise (forward). Turn the prop CCW til it locks, use bungee to hold in place. Put it back together. Make sure quad ring and lower shift shaft washer are in place. You don't have to take it ALL apart, just drop it enough to get to the lower shift shaft.:) Good luck.

Re: first boat

there is no way to get the unit low enough without taking it off so i took it down and after about 6 tries got it into place but is there a way to adjust the shift linkage. it is making a slight clicking noise in neutral and when i put it into forward it goes in but seems like it sits just between neutral and forward when going back to neutral. the prop stops but theres a clicking noise
