1995 88 Johnson SPL - purchased this year.
After removing my exhaust cover and finding some piston damage I am concerned that the damage may be caused by a lean condition.

I would like to rebuild the carbs, I have not done this before and would like some insight on the level of difficulty and potential issues.

I am not concerned about removing the carbs or matching up the parts from the kit but more about possibly messing up the lean/rich mixture or idle of the motor inadvertently or other pitfalls of working with the carbs.

Any insight would be appreciated.
Thank you.

Your engine has fixxed jets so the mix isn't adjustable so you can't screw it up, it can run lean from clogged jets though so always good to clean them if it has been awhile.

Re: First Carb Rebuild - 88 SPL

Thank you for the info. I read everything on the forumn and above links, very helpful.

I notice above 5150abf stated that jets on the 1995 88 SPL are 'fixed' and do not require adjustment. Should I take from this that there are no fine adjustments other than the float position to make with these carbs. If so that would be great.
The other threads, about other model Johnsons, discuss adjusting the carbs by backing out the high/low speed jets 'x' turns to get the right adjustment. Not having that headache would be a bonus.
Thanks

Actually, the Carbs are easy to rebuild. The Jets are fixed, so there are no high and low speed adjustments. Just make sure you get the float adjustment as close as possible.

The 88 SPL is a great motor. Well worth the effort to keep it running correctly.

Re: First Carb Rebuild - 88 SPL

I just did my two carbs on my 90HP (1987) a week ago, and it was pretty str8 forword. Just make sure you remove the core plugs, and blow air through all holes, jets, ect. I didnt see any dirt in my two carbs, but, after running it, it made a big differance at idle. I have a crossflow, and it now purrrs at idle, and roars at WOT. I spend more time getting them off, and on, then then rebuild.
