nerc 5.7l with 2bbl mercarb recently rebuilt

i have started my boat on muffs everyother day the past week to work out any kinks that may arrise.....everytime i start it up it starts on the second crank and starts with authority, stays at op temp and really havent had a single problem on muffs....have also started it at op temp on muffs to make sure i would not get stranded

well.....took her out for the first time on the ohio and idled around all the limbs and logs until i could open her up.... (started on the first crank by the way)i ran her about 2-3 min cruising speed and she was running strong so i shut her off to check the gear oil level in the res because of the recent impellor change....all was good with the oil level so we just floated for a few and decided to come on back in cuz the water was so trashed up and this was just a test run anyway......

i cranked her and no start.....crank and no start...so i set there to let her get the temp down and man did that take a while....finally got back down to 125 degrees and tried again....no luck...buy this time after trying to start her up 9 to 10 times the battery was going dead....i understand it must have something to do with it not starting at op temp.....how can i troubleshoot this? it was pretty embarassing getting towed in by an aluminmun bass tracker with my big a## boat behind it. could the choke be set wrong? the carb was rebuilt by my uncle who builds 20,000 sprint car engines and he didnt set it to the merc manual 2 notches over setting....he just trouble shot it until it ran good to his judgement and like i said it always starts on the second crank......please anyone got some suggestions?

When you got it home, did it start on muffs again?

first thing that i tried, but the battery was already too dead from all that cranking on the water.....it has never failed to start cold, since the carb rebuild....before the carb rebuild it just took a little more time

Sounds electrical, could have been the safety/lanyard switch. I had that problem once, scared that something serious happened, got out the voltmeter and dug around. Then I saw the safety switch on the throttle and felt really stupid.

First, charge the battery.

Then, with the key in run, test for 12v @ on the coil. My vote is you wont have any power there.
