First Drive Inspection - Help??

Today I removed both the upper and lower unit to inspect the gimbel, u-joints and the bellows. The boat is a '99 year model with a 3.0L engine and a Alpha 1 Gen II drive. The drive has <100 hrs on it but obviously a few years.

Inspection yielded the following:
- Drive fluid was clean with no foaming.
- There was a lot of grease on the drive side of the bearing.
- The gimbel spins freely with no freeplay, however, it does make some noise when spinning the bearing. It is smooth, and feels somewhat tight like a bearing should feel.
- There was no evidance of water or rust in the drive.
- The U-Joints were tight with no free play that I could feel. They spun freely with no slop.
- There was some discoloration on the bore of the gimbel where the shaft inserts. It looked copperish, but could have been a dried lubricant of some sort.

I really expected to find more wrong. The drive had seemed to make a little more noise of late. So the question now is "what should I do now"? I need some advice on how to proceede.....

Grease Ujoints, install new O/D mounting gasket kit and reinstall outdrive.

Was there any grease in the gimbal bearing. Looks like the gimbal bearing is dry of grease. Befor you put the drive back on make sure the gimbal bearing will take grease. I seen this bearing put in and will not take grease. Grease fitting is on the port side half way up on tansom bracket close to the hull. Make sure grease comes out in the middle of the bearing. After the drive is back on grease the gimbal bearing. I put about 10 pumps to it.

Yes, I did clean all of the excess grease from the bearing. There was a ton of it. The u-joints do not have a grease fitting. Can I add one?

If you ever need u-joints replace them w/ ones w/ the zerk fitting. Check the bellows real good for hairline cracks. Also, when was the last impeller change. Might be a good time

I did the impeller last season. I am seriously thinking about doing a complete bellows job now. I know that it is currently not leaking, but it is ~5 years old.

Re: First Drive Inspection - Help??

BTW - One other thing that I found interesting was that the bearing was rather dry considering the number of times that I have pumped it up of late. I did clean a lot of excess grease from the outside of the gimbel. I pumped the bearing full again and rotated it slowly to distribute the grease. The bearing feels great now.

What is the proper procedure for greasing the drive - while running or down?? I am doing it while running to distribute the grease, but maybe it is simply sliging the grease out of the bearing....

I would totally agree with replacing the bellows and while you are in there the shift cable is a good idea since you are half way home already.5 years is time enough.Always better to be safe than sorry.Charlie
