Post-rebuild of a 1997 Yamaha 150HP Salt Water Series II S150TXRV 2 stroke 6 cylinder powerhead.
( Click here to view updated blog with new pictures )

Is it normal to smell an unusual burning smell like you smell when you plug in a new soldering iron for the first time?

Powerhead has been run total of 10 minutes so far.

Thannks.

I think the first run-in is a period of anxiety. All kind of new smells are possible considering the cleaning agents and lubricants used in the rebuilding process plus any paint you applied. Then there are new parts that are being heated up for the first time like plastics, epoxies and the like that smell too.

Hope it's not a problem. You really did a job on that thing and what a job of documentation.

Mark

Good luck. You are running a 25:1 oil mix for the break-in aren't you? My Merc manual specifies that and I'd assume Yammies are the same beins they are made from the same type of parts. Then when you feel confident (50 hrs) you can quit adding oil to the fuel tank and run on your injection oil only.

Mark

Mark, yes, my Clymer manual advises 25:1 for non oil injected. I am oil injected but suspect a problem with oil injection....i'm going to post a new issue for that on this forum right now..

Manual advises 10 hours is break-in period.

By the way I don't smell that smell anymore. Ran her for at least 30 min last night.
