Man Ray, If you keep it up i'm gonna be swapping in my silverado on a s-10. I drove through the Chevy lot yesterday but lucky for me they had no S-10's. I bought a brand new S-10 in '92,sold it in '01 and it was my all time favorite truck. :D

Hey Castaway, I know this has been covered b4 but be sure to break that baby in right. Run the livin snot out of it. Take it right up to red line, just don't hold it there. Vary your speed (rpm) from medium to high. It's the heat, caused by sustained high rpm and load, that hurts a new engine. NOT RPM. The old adage 'break em in slow' and they'll be slow is true. Break em in fast and they'll be quick.

Be sure to change the oil after the first 500 mi. especially if you're aggressive.

Then be sure to do your lil baby a favor. After 4-5000 miles, if she's not using any oil, CONVERT HER OVER TO SYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYNTHETIC OIL.

Re: First full fill up ... 24.6 mpg!!!

Great little truck...my 95 S-10 has 95K on her and I have'nt spent a dime on her except a battery and tires. I pull 3500lbs quite regular, 80 miles of hilly roads. This is quite a strain on the 4 cylinder (3rd & 4th gear at 55mph)but she still does not use any oil and gets 25+ mpg (when not towing)I change my oil once a year with Wal-Mart brand regular 10-30 oil. I believe that I can get another 100K out of her.

That's pretty good for a 4 banger, but I get anywhere from 19 to 22 depending on what I am doing in my full size Silverado.

So I will give ya a couple MPG and keep my size.

Re: First full fill up ... 24.6 mpg!!!

ive been hitting her hard enough to shift at 3000 - 3500, not letting her redline yet, but shes over 600 mi now, and shes run at 68 - 70 on the open road, about 2500 rpm with that 4.10 rear

that was avg for the tank, including traffic jams, stop n go, and just sitting in the truck listening to it run

with tonneu cover and a steady run somewhere, I dunno, maybe down to Solomons Island, I would prolly get near 30 on a trip

shell do 40 mph in fourth, just under 1500 rpm, motor purrs ... bet she would get near 40 mpg there

it keeps getting smoother and smoother, I love it, and that motor LOVES to tach up, really pulls hard and I am no where near into it

and the handling rocks, just toss it into a corner and around you go, I do think if the weather is good this week ill put the sway bar in, prolly friday - its a one inch thick rear sway bar, the rear needs some weight on it anyway - this bolts right to the rear axle!

time for an oil change, and I was just down in delaware too, hmmm, I do it next weekend at wal mart

:D :D :D :D :D :D

Re: First full fill up ... 24.6 mpg!!!

I was just waiting for this to become an oil related topic, It had to get here eventually!!

At the first change, change ALL the fluids, (except maybe the brakes)! Is this an auto or a a stick? If a stick you would not even beleive what will come out of it in just 3,000 miles! Personally I would change the oil and filter at 1,000 Mi. the first time! Whats the owners manual say for your type of driving as far as oil goes? Not even a bad Idea to do a complete flush on an automatic! Things will last a lot longer if you do this!!

I will agree with Boomyal on the synthetic! :D

LubeDude

rear oil too? is an auto, I am going to have them change it under warranty to solve a shudder problem, feels like the trans slips a tad on take off

they will say normal operation, but know how I make noise here?

Im like that in real life, squeaky wheels get grease, especially when they can bellow as loud as I can!!!!

in my eyes, shes every bit as deserving of quality service as an Avalanche or one of those ugly azz Hummers they have by the dozen there

(looks like the national guard there, lol, I think they are the hummer headquarters of the east coast!)

Re: First full fill up ... 24.6 mpg!!!

We didn't even bother with any break-in type driving with our S-10 bug truck. It went from sitting on the lot with a few miles on it to driving 150 to 300 miles a day with a lot of weight in the back all the time. It gets good mileage, I would say mid to high twenties, but it is also a stick. With no load and an automatic, I can't see why you won't end up with mileage in the upper twenties. Heck, my F150 gets about 18 or 19 mpgs, and it has a 351 in it....

25 is thw worst mileage I ever got. Beats the heck out of the two toyota trucks I used to have. In 9 years and 10 oil changes, one battery and one set of tires she still runs like new. It still has the original sparkplugs, belts, brakes, and fluids. I have gotten more than my moneys worth on this one! I am going to change the anti-freeze this year and the oil this spring. The money I save goes for fishing, boating and beer!

Yes, rear oil too!! Ive always done this in the past with new vehicles!! If you drain it into a clean black container and take it out in the daylight and look at it, you will be amazed at the breakin metal particals in the oil! Its actually quite a wake-up call!!

LubeDude

Ray, I have the 4.3 V6 in my S-10 and get consistent (as in every single time) 21mpg. I drive 80 miles a day, You should easily see 25+, close to 30, with the 2.2.

Ray, Don't get carried away with too much TLC....I don't recommend that you be as slack as I have on service, but the recommendations in the owners manual will be adequate. You can over-do a good thing...I think the head doctors call it excessive compulsive! Enjoy your truck and enjoy life and find a balance between the two.

LubeDude has a good idea, take really good care intially, then you can stuff it with synthetic and ignore it for a few thousand, pop a filter and another quart in

I would synthetic lube the rear too, already out 12 grand, whats a another hunnerd? lol

:p

Re: First full fill up ... 24.6 mpg!!!

this thing IS fun, Ive been letting her tach out to 4000, nearly 700 miles on her, gets right up to highway speeds

I am getting a little carried away in the off ramps dept, that sway bar will likely be the best way to add some wieght to the rear end that I could do

since the cap is a ways away, the tonneu will be good to go

and the bed rug, I think ill get a hunk of marine remnant until I can pony up the 350 bucks for the genuine article

Christmas is coming like a frieght train, cant be selfish, besides I love to give gifts

but ummmm ... maybe just the sway bar ... for now ...

:D :D :D :D :D :D
