Hey everyone,

Long time reader, first time poster. I love boats. I grew up with boats. Just never owned a boat before. My wife and I have been talking about getting a new ski/sport boat for a little while and we have been looking at different manufacturers. We don't have any particular loyalty to one boat maker or another. We are looking fro something new and a good bang for the buck. We are looking for something around the 18' to 20' range that might hold up to 7 people or so. I do like the Four Winns Horizon line as it seems to offer a lot for the money. I want something that I can learn with and eventually move on to something a little bigger or expensive/feature rich. We also like the look and features on the Glastron 195 SX. One downside that I have read about the glastron 195 is that because of it's light weight, it can be a problem on a lake with anything more than glass-like surface. I wanted to see if there are any opinions for a boat of this size so I might add them to our research list.

Just a little more info, we have a Mitsubishi Montero sport for a towing vehicle (though we haven't towed anything with it yet). It has a 5000 lb towing capacity so we want to make sure whatever we get fits within that range. The boat would be used mostly on lakes and delta-like rivers throughout the summer. Fishing is an afterthought and towing a skier is preferable.

I hope this gives a little information on what we are looking for.

Thanks!

H

You may want to take a look at the Tahoe Q4 Ski and Fish package. Rates well and is priced right for a new first boat.

Decent motor options plus outfitted reasonably well for an intro model boat.

Your montero should be able to tow anything in the 20 ft range. Be sure to have brakes on the the trailer though.

Good Luck

Jim

There will be differences in how the various brands and models ride. But in the sub-20 size range the differences will not be great. They will all be overwhelmed by serious chop.

I second the fish-n-ski suggestion. However not all dealers stock these.

For 19 footers on a budget there are lots of choices. Also take a look at Caravelle, Maxum, Monterey, and Rinker.

Kelly Cook

DO NOT buy an underpowered boat, or you will be looking to upgrade very soon. The boat should be powered at or near the maximum rated power.

You will take a big hit on depreciation buying new, and then selling in 2-3 years. Why not concider a used latemodel boat to start out with. Then buy new when you know what you want for a second boat.

Hi, i brought a 2004 Tahoe Q5 last spring and I love it. Easy to load and unload. Has nice features and 4.3 merc. engine that really runs. The boat is 18'9" and hold 9 people. the price was 19,995 with trailor included. Try one out if you get a chance
Also, the weight is about 3700 pound so you could tow with your vehicle.
