First motor for rookie boater

I have recently purchased a used 40HP Mariner O/B. I want to be sure that all of the "important" safety systems are operational (ie temp sensing, oil injection etc). Where can I go for direction on checking these systems. The motor started right up from cold when first inspecting it and ran "flawlessly" for about 15 minutes on muffs before being shut off. This is not to say that all of the features were working though. You never know with something that is used. I want to be sure before heading out onto the lake.

Hi Rod

Please tell us what year your motor is. Depends on age as to what features your motor has. The best first step you can take is get a manual and read up about your motor. It will help with asking and understanding replies on this forum.

Greg :)

A manual is on its way. Thought I'd try to get a head start from the experts here first. The motor is a 1991 I believe (s/n D041999) 4 cylinder Magnum model.

Rod

Saw this on another post of yours which answers my reply above.

"Found a loose wire under the cowling of my 1991 Mariner 40Hp. It is a 4cyl version."

hello from across the lake :)
for any used motor, a compression test is first
order. assuming good compression in al cyl's, an
actual water test is 2nd. (can't fully open/test
on muffs) if you r not able/willing to do these
things, make purchase "contingent" on passing.
(u pick the shop and pay for it)
good luck,
M.Y.

Re: First motor for rookie boater

From reading your other post it sounds like you don't have a temperature gauge on your motor. I can't help with the oil injection system, none of my motors are oil injected.

As a preventative measure I'd change the water pump impeller and change the lower unit oil. When draining the oil look for any signs of excess metal wear and the presence of water. After a few trips on the lake I'd change the L/U oil again just to double check for any water infiltration.
