First oil change HELP!

First time changing oil on my i/o. Warmed up the engine on the muffs shut engine off and removed dipstick. I bought one of those "drill pumps". It didn't pump s@#t! Maybe a cup in 5 min! Am I doing something wrong? Said it was self priming. What did I do wrong? Seemed to pick the oil up out of the pan but only dripped out of the outlet hose.

Eh, I tried one of those pumps. It sucked, not in the correct way. My boat has this garden-hose fitting that you can screw a hand pump onto, which works tons better than those dipstick tube suction devices. <br /><br />By the way, how on earth is that pump 'self priming' if it initally sucks up air? I'll never figure that out. You may notice the pump is supposed to rotate in a certain direction, so be sure you have the drill set that way.

You're runing the drill too fast.The veins of that impeller need time to expand and conform in that oil. It's not like pumping water.Try slowing down and keep the drill as close to oilpan level as possible.

FreeBee---do you have room to attach a fitting to your oil pan drain? Overtons sells a 4-foot pressurized-type hose that attaches to your drain plug hole. You just run the hose out the bilge hole in the stern, pop the cap on the other end, and drain into a container on the ground.<br /><br />Best thing I've purchased in a long time--about $35 for the unit.

I've always used one of those cheap hand pumps. It's a simple compact unit and oil changes only take 10-15 minutes. I think hondon's on to something...

Tony,the oil change is too important for a cheap drill attachment.I had an electric pump with a hose attached to the drain plug fitting on my last boat.about $99 and all I did was press a button for 2 minutes and the oil was drained completely.I loved it!!Changed the oil all the time.My new boat has twins and the access to the drain fittings is nearly impossible so I bought a Topside changer at west marine for $44.It is pretty easy and fast.It is a large hand pump on a storage can and vaccum draws the oil after about 25 pumps.You leave it alone and it does it all by itself.the key is getting the oil hot not just warm.The hotter it is the thinner it is and the faster it draws.It took about 10 minutes. I threw that piece of s%$t in the garbage. I put a pan under the oil pan and drained the oil into it. Then I scooped the oil out with a cup. Not to bad, less frustraing than that stupid pump!

You would think they could build a boat where there would be a plug at the stern that you just unscrew and the oil would drain, (gravity), and the oil would be out. Maybe in the future.
