First Oil Change - Mobil 1??

I dumped my engine oil last week after getting the motor too hot (see past posts if interested) and have a new filter installed and am ready for oil after I leave work in a couple of hours. I have always used Mobil 1 in all my cars and love it. Is this something I can use in my boat engine? I personally cannot see why not but thought I would get another opinion. 1988 mercury marine 3.0L 4cyl I/O.

Thanks.

You will get alot of different opinions on this. I use Mobil 1 in my boat (10W 30) and have no problems. I have the same motor as you, Merc 3.0

I have heard that if you start using synthetic motor oil after years of using regular oil, that your seals will swell and begin to leak. Anyone else here of this? May be due to the materials used to make seals in older engines. Probably wouldn't be a problem in newer engines.

I have never heard that, but would be curious to hear if it is true.

I've heard that too but I was told it was due to the synthetic being lighter and more "fluid." And then I was told it was all bunk and that if the seals leak they were shot anyway...
This could get good... :D

Seems like I opened a can of worms!
After viewing other posts I decided to go with my Mobil 1. I would also say that what was more important was frequent oil changes than what type oil.
