Greetings,

I have put a deposit on a boat and would like input about the purchase. I have an agreement and can get it back if I don't like the boat after I drive it.

It's a 1986 Bayliner Capri 1950. Originally had a 4.3 L OMC engine but it was changed out and now has a 3.0 L OMC with a Cobra Outdrive. Is this 140 HP? I suspect the engine was replaced in the mid 90's and hasn't been used much. (current owner of 3 years has health issues and hasn't used in a year) The outdrive looks original with scapes and paint chipping off. Stainless steel prop, original prop is in the boat and looks new.

Cosmetically the outside is great, the inside is so so. Needs cleaning, no major rips or tears, but lots of holes where stuff was mounted and removed in the dash and sides. (fishing stuff)

Given the demise of OMC is this a wise purchase for $2900 with trailer (trailer is very good condition) and tops (squirrels chewed holes in bimini top). Can I get parts, if so where?

Humm, well the other one I looked at had a rusted out trailer from the salt, seats were torn and worn, carpet was disgusting the hull was worn from pulling it up on the beach and they wanted $2900.

After looking at some of the junk they wanted in Cumming GA on boattrader.com I felt pretty good about this one but what can you expect for a 20 year old boat?

Where would you suggest we look?

Re: First Power Boat

i guess the price is going to vary a lot buy were you live

any boat of that age has to be checked for wood rot very carefully transome, floor ect

but be aware no matter who made the drive and motor many shops dont like to do repair work on 20 year old boats

so i would look into what you can get service for were you live before you buy and be aware that what may seam like a small problem can be a real budget buster

tommays

Thanks,

I decided to look at newer boats and most likely a new Sea Ray.
