1982 sunrunner omc v6 I think it has a stringer 800 stern. O.K. so my first post was very educational. I have learned a lot about boat motors in general. Quick recap, my boat overheated and burned some wires. Diagnosis : many believe the impeller needs replaced. I looked in the t-housing and everything was completely dry. The large hose going to the belt which I believe has the water pump was full of water. I dont think the impeller is working because the water inlet line is completely dry and the t-housing as well.

First off, I am no mechanic. I have one shop manual and another by a different author on the way. I am at least of moderate intelligence and should be able to perform this feat. If I don't know the name of something or misidentify something please let me know.

Before I replace the impeller how do I check and make sure it is'nt working? My understanding is that I would open the brass petcock drain valves on the block, hook up some ear muffs, start the motor and if water continuously comes out the impeller is working and if water stops coming out then impeller needs replaced.

So if thats the case I will remove the stern drive, remove the upper gear unit, replace impeller and put back together. Sounds easy. I am concerned that re-assembling the stern drive and shifter will be the hard part as the book suggests.

Another issue is the gears. When you put the boat into drive the gears grind and slip but eventually go into place. What should I look for while I have the stern drive off? In the pics you can see the ("ball gears"?). The picture doesnt do justice those gears are messed up. They are all dented and worn. Should I plan on replacing these? Is this the gear issue or is it just a consequence of a bigger problem. Should I buy other replacement parts, i.e. Gaskets, gromets, O-rings, etc. for this job.

The wires that are melted run to the "shift converter housing". The wires seem to be ok but they rubber protector that surrounds them is melted. Should I replace these too.

Thanks all, I will start this project tomorrow morning if I have sufficient replies.

Replace the impeller. You test the impeller by visually inspecting it, then throwing it in the trash. Don't skimp with your engines cooling. If it is broken into pieces, yours almost certainly will be, you must flush out ALL of the pieces so they don't cause blockage and restrict the water flow. Take your time, follow the directions, you'll be fine.
Those ball gears are pretty bad, have them replaced.
When shifting, DON'T ease it into gear. Shift the boat firmly into gear. You are meshing gears without benefit of a traditional clutch.
Yes, those wires need to be insulated. The shielding may look fine, but it's been heated and will start to crack.

Re: First repair, W/ PICS 1982 omc v6

Ok so I started the boat because I wanted to see if there was a stream of water shooting at the ball gears which I heard means the impeller is working. I turned it on and it started great and sounded good. When I started it I guess the boat was in gear even though the throttle stick was verticle. I couldnt get the boat into neutral I moved the throttle to neutral, heard the click but nothing. So the propeller was spinning the whole time. Immediately after hooking up the hose I could see that oil coming out of the prop and it just kept coming. What does this mean? I'm guessing something is broke that cost a lot of money and is hard to fix. Also the blue wire in the pic was smoking. This was after I turned the motor off. It continued to smoke until I turned the key into the off position. ?????? I dont understand. Oh and the whole impeller thing. I now think it works because there was water in the T-housing when I took the hoses off and I saw the stream shooting at the ball gears. The engine was very hot for only running for a minute. Could the water pump at the front of the motor need replacing?? Thanks folks

I didn't read all the details. Hopefully you got some good advice. But there are two things you really ought to do. One, lose the whale tale. They are horrid on the handling. Get a set of smart tabs.

Two, get a flush fitting to replace the right side trunion cap. Then you can toss the mouse ears when you run the engine in the drive.

It seems like this boating thing has gone horribly awry for you I really feel bad for you with that engine and that drive its just a bad place to be.
I would say you should look for a experienced marine mechanic, hopefully an old OMC head. That thing seems to need attention all over. That diarrhea leaking from the outdrive is a bad sign.

Well, I am far from an expert on any of this, but I am a decent backyard mechanic at the least. I do believe you are in over your head. The color of that oil coming out of your propeller is not good. Your outdrive is in serious trouble. You have lots of wires that need lots of attention. In short, what they said above...find someone that knows OMC. This one needs a lot of work. Just because it starts and sounds good doesn't mean it's right.
