1982 sunrunner omc v6 I think it has a stringer 800 stern. O.K. so my first post was very educational. I have learned a lot about boat motors in general. Quick recap, my boat overheated and burned some wires. Diagnosis : many believe the impeller needs replaced. I looked in the t-housing and everything was completely dry. The large hose going to the belt which I believe has the water pump was full of water. I dont think the impeller is working because the water inlet line is completely dry and the t-housing as well.
First off, I am no mechanic. I have one shop manual and another by a different author on the way. I am at least of moderate intelligence and should be able to perform this feat. If I don't know the name of something or misidentify something please let me know.
Before I replace the impeller how do I check and make sure it is'nt working? My understanding is that I would open the brass petcock drain valves on the block, hook up some ear muffs, start the motor and if water continuously comes out the impeller is working and if water stops coming out then impeller needs replaced.
So if thats the case I will remove the stern drive, remove the upper gear unit, replace impeller and put back together. Sounds easy. I am concerned that re-assembling the stern drive and shifter will be the hard part as the book suggests.
Another issue is the gears. When you put the boat into drive the gears grind and slip but eventually go into place. What should I look for while I have the stern drive off? In the pics you can see the ("ball gears"?). The picture doesnt do justice those gears are messed up. They are all dented and worn. Should I plan on replacing these? Is this the gear issue or is it just a consequence of a bigger problem. Should I buy other replacement parts, i.e. Gaskets, gromets, O-rings, etc. for this job.
The wires that are melted run to the "shift converter housing". The wires seem to be ok but they rubber protector that surrounds them is melted. Should I replace these too.
Thanks all, I will start this project tomorrow morning if I have sufficient replies.
