I went out today for the first time. Thanks to all of you here in the forum. The boat ran and stayed running BUT, It had no power. it wouldnt even lift the nose out of the water. Is there something I need to look at or do? I know I need to Decareb the motor is there anything else. I changed the plugs. any other ideas?

Assuming this is your 50 hp force?

Does the engine rev up?
Is it firing on both cylinders?
Compression readings?

Could be a spun prop hub, which is when the prop spins on the rubber bushing inside of it.

It does rev up but not sure if its rev up all the way, I would be interested in the compression readings but not sure on how to do it. would love for you to fill me in on how to check the compression, im assuming I need a gauge? I would assume its firing on bopth cylinders because it ran very smooth when I was on the gas. sorry for being alittle slow I am a newbie and need help thanks. and yes it is my 50hp That would have been some good info for you. :D

Would anybody like to explain to me how to do a proper compression test. I would love to do it but I want to do it right.

Re: First ride was kind of a success but I need help PEASE!

To do an compression test you first need a compression tester( relatively cheap). Screw the tester into the spark plug hole( make sure the depth of the tester is not longer than the spark plug as i have seen pistons damaged from people not paying attention to this).Spin the engine over with the starter about 5 to 7 times on both cylinders. The reading should be above 120psi and not more than 10% difference between cylinders. Its a simple test but if you have never done it before it can be over whelming.

The other thing to look at is how much weight did you have in the boat. Good luck

I am going to do the compression test today. How would I check the the prop to see if it is spinning in the hub?

Simple make a mark on the prop locking nut and a corresponding mark on the prop. Start the engine and run it for a few minuets( with muffs on or in a water tank) if the marks don't line up after shut down its spun.

Very cool I will try that. But I think im into a spark problem in 1 cylinder. I am going to test spark tomorrowand hope it tells me which 1 it is. I have 1 plug that is very clean and the other that is oilly. any suggestions. Thanks

Any compression over 120 is good. As Roscoe said it may be a spark problem. The clean plug indicates that its not been firing. The oily plug indicates the fuel been burning.

PS you should keep your questions to one thread as it helps us help you work through your problem.

Re: First ride was kind of a success but I need help PEASE!

Thanks for the tip. I will do so in the future, I was tryin to get more people to bite on it. If I have no spark would you know where to start looking first? I would assume the coil but is there anything else that I should look at.

Measure voltage of trigger, stator, coil. Use your manual to find proper voltage for each.

I also noticed little holes on the back of the coil. looked like little burn holes. would this be a sign? Im not sure ive only seen automotive coils before.

Re: First ride was kind of a success but I need help PEASE! UPDATED HELP PLEASE

So assuming I did this right the coil primary ohms tested at 0.00 The secongary tested at 420 the book says 0.2-0.7 on the primary and 800-1100 on the secondary. so I would say the coil is bad correct. I did this test with the coil off the motor. I didnt think it mattered for an ohm test.

If you have what looks like burn marks on the rear of the coil i would say that's your problem. A test you could do is take your known good coil and hook it up to were the suspected bad coil hooks up and see if it works. One thing to remember is that you cant inter change coils from different years.

I think iboats have them and or most out board shops should be able to get them for you.

Re: First ride was kind of a success but I need help PEASE!

so I got my new coil from Iboats today and due to the heavey rain we have been having for a month I couldnt get it in. but, I noticed the new one didnt have a ground wire, but metal tabs on it that go inside of it at one of the bolt holes. does this mean it is self grouded? I hope this works Im supposed to leave for the lake tomorrow night or fri am.

It could be grounded through the body where it bolts up. The only thing left is to put it on and try it. Best of luck
