As you may or may not know, have been restoring my 1988 Liberator Cobra 800 5.7. Had to replace the gauges. When we took it out this weekend, at WOT the tach reads 8000 or pegged! It does not appear to actually be 8000 rpms, I have been in many boats and it sounds like it is running fine. What would cause this?
Thanks

Hey you got it running! Gotta LOVE those Libs!! (the FourWinns kind!!!)

You probably have the tach hooked up with the switch in the wrong position!

Yeah, my wife turned to me after we hit the first major chop and said "I think I am going to like boating again!" It was sweet. I can not believe how sporty it feels for such a large boat. Large to me anyways! I will have to check the switch, but I am sure I set it to 8 cyl. Wonder if the newer guage has to be wired differant for an older boat?

Shouldn't.......your's is just a points type ignition right?

An electric tach is simply a "pulse-counter"........you can only connect it to the PLUS (+) side of the coil or the MINUS(-) side.

If you connect it to the + side, you would be trying to measure 12vDC. Wouldn't work at all!

There's only one place to connect.........the side of the coil that goes to the points (dist)

Got any pictures of your completed project? (video?)

Cheers,

Rick

Even if the tach is in the correct position, switch it back and forth a few times to ensure good connection.
