This afternoon I had just resealed and recharged the A/C system on my GMC pick up, when a strong, but familar odor permiated my property.<br /><br />I decided to follow my nose an see where exactly where the "boquet" was coming from, which didn't take long.<br /><br />I got a about 75 yards from my house and found "Rosebud" on an adjecent road. The deceased skunk was in the #1 lane and in the #2 lane. Not nice. <br /><br />It won't smell too bad a few days from now, so I have something to look forward to. :D <br /><br /> ...Bob in Calif...<br /><br /> "Rest In Pieces"

I've got 2 of the sweet beasties in my backyard. They like onions, apples and french fries. In the three years of their presence they have not sprayed us once. Nor are they afraid of us. They come up to the picnick table and beg for food which is wisely forthcoming, just in case..

Well, I'm not that intimate with "Flower", who has lived in my machine shed for a couple of years, but he (she) doesn't seem to object to my presence when I go in there.<br /><br />Just watch out for front foot stamping. I understand that is a "back off" message.

That is correct.<br />That is a warning of what's coming if you do not leave them alone.

And don't believe the people that tell you "If you lift their back legs off the ground, they can't spray."<br /><br />Dad tried this about 50 years ago, when his new sweetheart(mom) wanted one for a pet. Well, he picked it up alright and got a load square in the face. It was 2 weeks before he got a kiss.

"rosebud" never heard that refered to a skunk. Did see my first skunk yesterday running down the middle of the road. Also had my first skunk 2 weeks ago, had # 5 yesterday (if ya don't count non target fish) Anyway they all stink, even rosebuds sometimes. ;)

One night a racoon and a skunk made quite a racket on our back deck while they discussed who was going to eat the pet food. I closed the diner after that. It took the dog a few times to get it.... :(

I've got a skunk living around my house too, sometimes I have to wait patiently for it to move away from my stairs so I can get in the house at night. They don't seem to be so shy. I always whistle a little when I'm out in the yard at night, just to give an advance warning of my presence. My skunk doesn't get too excited unless I surprise him/her. I'm not too worried amout getting within a few yards I just don't approach it directly. Pretty animal!

I can't think of anything my pair of Airedales (Hank&Nellie)hate more.<br />They always associate their brutal bloodsport with bad bad smell, scowls from the master, stay back commands, no pets, and the dreaded washdown.<br /><br />One year their effort to control the "Le puew" population was so successful, that I doubled up on their rabies shots.<br /><br />This is a high rabies occurance area. With several Bats, Skunks and Foxes found each year with it. It's said that if a skunk is seen in broad daylight, the chances are good it has rabies.

Re: First Skunk

I work at a remote naval transmitter site on the graveyard watch. Sometimes when I go out at night I see them out in the antenna fields chasing bugs and things. These are spotted skunks. They are smaller than the striped kind. So one night I go down in the basement to check our Ac units and I spooked one that had crawled in through a cable run. He got very aggressive and kept walking toward me on his front legs with his tail high in the air. I walked up the stairs that lead to the outside and it was then that I relized I forgot my keys and If I went outside I would be locked out.<br />I waited at the top of the stairs for a half hour before the skunk went on his way.

Had a akita that killed every critter it found. We were camping in winter in the U.P. Mich. she killed a skunk last morning before we left, 6hr. drive in a jeep wagoneer home. That dog NEVER learned a lesson, killed every porky she found also, baby porkys are the worst, quills deep in the throat.

My dog did battle with a few skunks, man what a mess, after a while she seemed to leave them be. I agree with skinnywater about the rabies. Around here it is prevailent and if I had a skunk living on my property I think I would do away with it.

Re: First Skunk

I have been trappin' skunk for the last few weeks, they have been commin' out of the wood works. One customer has so many skunks under their house and shop that I spent all last week removing skunks caught in the traps. A skunk a day keeps everyone away.....
