so i took the boat and the 300 HP V8 johny to my dealer to make sure i had everything done right.everything was in check and he handed my first test prop.i asked if he thought the transom would hold he said yes it will hold with no problem.the boat is rated for the weight of a 200 HP 4 stroke max so he said it should hold just fine.so i got the boat lowered in the water and did the break in.the next day i was going to see what this thing could do.so i put the hammer down bow shoots to the sky and the acceleration was soooo great i mean you could feel it in your chest.so i get it planned out and everything is just moving soooo fast.so i look at the speedometer and the needle went all the way around past 65 and past the blank space and was on the back side of the little pin that the needle rest on at idle.this is when things went really bad.a 6 foot wave comes out of no where and i hit it at wot.the boat was in the sky and it was pretty high up there.the boat hits the water so hard when i land i go flying through the da** windshield.lucky i had no feed back steering so the outboard cant turn it self.lucky i was int hurt to bad i got up and grab the wheel and here is a ship right in front of me so i turn so hard to port the boat starts taken on water and alot of it.by this time i'm turned away from the ship and the whole time i was throttling back but i did not want to go through the windshield again so i slowed down slowly.i never did get to check my RPM readings.but i had enough for one day i was kinda in shock.so now i know why everyone says dont go over the max HP.but im not never taken off the 300 HP johny.but i think ill stick to lakes with it.

Crazy not to have that on !!!! When things get a little rough for us I always reach for it and if I am by myself I always have it attatched.

Wow!!! Sounds exciting! Glad to hear you are OK!

The wave that came out of nowhere; was that the wake from the ship you nearly hit? Were you going so fast you didn't see it?

What size is your boat? I don't think I would limit myself to lakes only; just keep an eye on the water in front!!!

what happen was i seen the ship but it looked really far away and by the time i got back up from going through the windshild it was right up on me blaring its horns.im not sure if that was the ship wake or not the boat is a 2007 202 sea hunt hull size 19 foot max hp 200 1900 pounds dray weight.i still need to find out my top speed and my RPM but I think im going to take a little break from boating

hahahahaha, shame man .... don't worry you'll be back, after about a week of shock you'll go back wanting more .... believe me, you should have asked me for advice .... I run oversized motors all the time .... but I would have told you not to push that motor to it's max on your first time out ..... you need to get the feel of the boat first turning stopping, parking etc. then slowely as you get more comftable you can speed it up, a boat like that is meant for flat water, so running that beast WOT would be recommended on mirror water ..... my 475hp johnson can't go on any other water otherwise i will kill myself .....

Re: first test run with the V johny

50 years doing the same (only 57, and a one of my boats is a WAY overpowered 16 foot Flatbottom drag boat thats lower than a Go-Kart), will find a wave LONG before it shows on the brain radar. Kill switch, toss on an inflatable PFD, and go figure it out. Buddy just bought a 29 foot "Fountain" with twin blown 502's's. We will be prepared, but stuff shows up REAL fast at 100+...and thats what its all about (some day I'll relate the 3 sheets to the wind late foggy night after closing the down river bars back in Illinois, screaming down the river at 70 (17 foot Switzer craft, XS Merc 150)..looked up to my left at a bow light of a 30 footer, slammed the wake, and my rear light showed nothing but air between the boat and water..could see where the boat left the water. Told the occupants to HOLD ON, were coming back down! (I hoped)...just too much fun being young, drunk, and stupid! Go for it...

Re: first test run with the V8 johny

It is a old racing motor, late 70's maybe early 80's not sure as it has no serial number and no hp rating anywhere, it is a V8 johnson offshore 1 my uncle imported and gave it to me .... the motor is basically just a block, carbs and spark plugs, it is huge and make a hell of a noise, we tested the motor and got 475hp at 10 000 rpm ...... that thing is definitely fully modified to the max and only seems to run better on race fuel that I use ... 103 octane .....

the water is not like the smooth interstate highway.. it's more like a country dirt road. think of doing 70 mph and up down a ungraded dirt road.

yea i think any more HP and the boat would rip it self apart its not really meant to be a high performance boat is a center conceal V bottom hull but a vary shallow V its a fishing boat all the way.i guess ill just get to my fishing spot a little faster now.lol

I just read this and got a good laugh about how you might have felt, lol. Hope you had some extra pants after that one. I know I would have probably needed them.

Take it easy on that thing, it sounds like you have got a rocket ship of a center console. I bet its fun, lol. I wonder how fast that thing will really run on GPS. That would be interesting to see for sure.

Have fun with that thing.
