I just bought my first boat, and could use any pointers. But what I really need is some info on the motor, it's a 1976 1150 mercury thunderbolt. I could use a manual, or just some tips on the thing, It has a small problem starting, but I believe the carbs just need to be cleaned. The boat it self is a 1976 hydrosport 17' bass boat, the boat is in fairly good condition, the carpet and a few spots in the deck need to be reaplaced. the trailor is in graet condition. I payed 800.00 Good Deal??? <br /><br /> thanks for any help.. <br /> Thomas

Hi boaterntexas....definitly get a service manual. You can get the generic type service manuals right here at iboats. Couple different publishers but Seyloc is generally the preferred generic. Better yet, go to your local dealership and see if you can get an OEM service manual for just your engine. The info in the OEM is a lot more user friendly than the generics. Pay particular attention to the sections dealing with lube and general care of the engine. Copies of original OEM service manuals can be had from other sources also. If this is your first boat, I assume you are new to boating. Before heading to the lake I suggest you familiarize yourself with the rules of the road by taking a US Coastguard or US Powersquadron boating course. You'll have a lot of fun and learn a lot too.<br /><br />c/6<br /><br />Hooty

OH NO! $800 for THAT boat... just kidding <br />Kinda old but if it runs and is lisenced you should get some fun out of it. Tips;<br />1) get manual<br />2) decarb. motor and change plugs<br />3) disassemble,clean carbs,sychonise them and adjust linkage.<br />4) set timing<br />5) replace water pump impeller unless you KNOW that it was done within a year<br />6) change lower unit oil(replace those little gaskets around the vent/fill screws)<br />7) pull prop,clean splines and regrease, reinstall<br />8) clean starter motor battery terminals<br />Do the above before you hit the water and you'll be ALOT less likely to have a problem. boaterntexas <br /><br />Sounds like you got a great deal!<br /><br />dmessy gave you some very good advice. I would add...<br /><br />For your engine run the fuel / oil mix at 40:1. Use mid-range or 92 octane gas. Make sure the timing is set at 21 degrees or slightly less. The idle mixture screws should be opened 2-1/2 turns to 3 turns from lightly seated or she will bog during acceleration. Install a glass shell inline fuel filter and monitor it closely.<br /><br />These engine are notorious for being difficult to start the first time of the day. Make sure you pump the fuel bulb until it is firm (don't over do it or you will stretch / distort the fuel pump diaphram.) If it is still difficult to start, get a spray bottle of pre-mixed fuel and squirt several shots into each carb. (Be careful.) Mine was such a pain that I made a "primer system" from 3 spray nozzles, 1/4" hose, a primer bulb and a 1 gallon tank. Now all I have to do is give that second bulb a good squeeze, then she starts right up. <br /><br />The last sugestion (and the best one)is as soon as the weather warms up a little more, go fishing!!!<br /><br />Good Luck,<br /><br />Gold Bear
