OK...so i think i got a good deal. That's what everybody says correct ;)

I purchased a 1986 Rinker v170. From looks....to me... its in great shape! The vinyl ia all new, hull looks good very few minor scratches (it is almost 30 yrs old). Motor looks clean.

now the questions....

I live in the frozen tundra of the northeast. The boats was stored in a barn covered for the last year. When i went to look at it they wanted 3300 for it. The battery was not taken out and completely dead. Nothing worked at all. So the guy said let me put a charger pack on it. The pack was hooked up and i got barely enough power to just turn the engine over once. dash light worked. etc. So I never actually seen it run.

I thought about it and the next day I figured I'll throw a low number. He has been trying to sell by word of mouth for a year now....best offer 1800. He took it!

So I think i got a deal.

Go to get it....cant raise the prop (is that what it is called?). Duh! battery is dead! I have to get to work so he says he'll try charging it to get it up for me. I get a call at work that day that he charged it a bit and it went up and ready to be picked up.

I tow home after work and park it. I go to put it down....just a click? battery is still VERY weak (around 20%). So...I place my charger on it. 12 hours later the battery is at 64%. So I think maybe that's enough to get it down. Nothing but a click (tried a few times and sometimes no click). Also....I notice a clicking under the dash area when the key is in the on position? I also tried the horn...nothing at all. Then I try the bilge switch....nothing at all. then i try the power vent...success! Well.....at least the vent worked.

So....suggestions? I have no idea where the bilge is located? where any fuses are located? is the click a solenoid issue?

Start by pulling and cleaning the battery connection at the battery. Don't try and start it without water to the lower unit or you will burn your impeller, bellows and exhaust flaps.

Too early to tell if you got a good deal or the seller got a good deal. Lots of things to check beside the engine in an I/O, which it sounds like this one is.

Good luck, hope you can have some fun with it this season :)

Welcome to iboats!:welcome:

Start with a new battery and clean terminals. The current battery is almost definitely toast.

Ditto that. If the battery was in good condition and had been charged before the winter hit, it'd still be good. Chances are it was stored in a discharged state, and the cold weather finished it off. In any event, if it's been on a charger and won't accept/keep a charge, it's done.

Good luck!

Looks nice esp for 18 bills. Get a new battery and go from there.Make sure it shifts smooth and get that outdrive pulled to inspect bellows, gimbal and u joints.Replace the impeller.Inspect all of your electrical connections.Inspect the ignition components and replace as necessary, set timing.Make sure no water was left in the block by pulling drain cocks and then reinstall them.Ask the po if he treated the fuel before storage,,replace fuel water separator, change oil in engine and outdrive.Replace fuel filter in carb and see how she runs on muffs. If ok water test her to make sure she doesn't take on water. Throw up some pics of what you find and you will get a lot of help from the Iboats family.Go through the FSM and do all the routine maintenance (lubrication of pivot points and such).Check ALL of the fluids.Good luck, hope it brings you a lot of fun on the water and quality time with your family!Maybe you will run into my family at Keuka.

And as far as the list above...i have no idea what half of those things are! But the PO did say it was serviced in late October and all fluids were checked and changed. He did say that it was winterized by blowing out all of the water and gas stabilizer. This is all new to me.

Found the first problem. There was no glass fuse in the lift solenoid! Anyone know what size? 20...50?

Yar! Good look'en boat! As for the list above, now's a great time to learn! A word of advice, study up on the regular maintenance you'll need to do, and then take care of all of it for the first time assuming none of it has been done. If its a used boat and you don't know the seller well (or how well he took care of it) I'd hit ALL the regular maintenance so you know your bases are covered.

Get a Mercruiser Service Manual and read through it. Tons of useful info there to guide you. Nice boat.. good to see another old Rinker.

do lots of reading ont he Cobra. Great when taken care of regularly, not so much if you neglect it. Worst than a mercruiser.

Two of my target lakes for retirement in a few years (Cayuga is the third possibility). Gorgeous area!

The solenoid itself shouldn't draw that much juice, and the fuse is there to protect the wiring. I'm guessing the wiring is probably 16 gauge, so go with a 10 amp fuse.

Umm well the first thing I would do is check the oil, if it looks mily at all you have problems. I would then run a compression check. I/o stored without the battery charged tells me the owner probably didn't properly winterize it either.
