hello im a new used boat owner. I purchased a 1977 mercury 1150 blue band motor. I have changed the plugs, decarbed it with seafoam and fuel. It has a 13 x 17 prop on it. well today was the first launch 2 people 500 pounds total, 35 gallons of fuel? 200 lbs. And my 16 foot norris craft bass boat is about 1200 pounds. So a grand total with gear and stuff is 2200 - 2400 pounds. We had the trim all the way down and all the weight is on the back of the boat. With wide open throttle is would only get up to 2500 rpms and not plane. When it did that I had my friend jump up to the front for about 10 seconds it came up on plane then we ran it for 4-5 hours straight about 45-50 mph at 5300 rpms. that was about 80 to 90 percent of the throttle I opened it up and went to 6000 rpms I didnt want to blow it up. My main problem or question is why you need to get up front to get it on plane? Maybe where just to fat for this motor. Or could someone with motor tell me if this is normal or do I need a new propeller and what size would be best to get to plane easy? I dont need the fastest boat just some torque. thanks tony

Your story has some contradictions, which make it difficult to diagnose. A slow hole shot would mean you are overpropped. However after you got on plane you were turning 6K RPM. This means your are underpropped, or ventilating. In addition at 5300 RPM you were going 50MPH. What was your speed at 6000RPM?

Something doesn't add up. How did you determine speed? GPS? Is your tach accurate?

When you first started was everyone in the stern? You might try evenly loading the boat and report back.

Gee, I wish I could make numbers like that with mine. (on a lot shorter and lighter boat than that)

Something doesn't sound right.
