First-time re-paint...

I'm redoing this 1987 Marlin and my first priority, since I have the engine running well, is to re-paint the whole thing. It is chocolate brown and tan... UGLY!! I am now repairing the holes and scrapes in the fiberglass. My question is, what is the criteria I should use to determine whether to use a polyester or epoxy gelcoat? And, can I effectively use auto paint as base color then gelcoat over that or should I use tinted gelcoat for color? It will only be used in freshwater lakes. Thanks for your help.

Re: First-time re-paint...

It is gelcoat now. If you want to gelcoat it again all that is needed is to fill the gouges and scratches, sand with 60 grit, Acetone wipe down and shoot the gelcoat. The the work begins!!!! If you want to paint it it's basically the same except the work comes first in that the sanding and the fairing must be perfect before you shoot the paint. You can use Auto paint or Marine paint or Tractor Implement Paint. Just depends on how much you want to spend. Do an advanced search on the forum for "Painting my Boat" you'll find a LOT of threads on the subject. Also search for Gelcoating. If you don't have the right equipment for gelcoating, it can be tough to do a good job.
