When I come to a stop the brakes are defnintly working.(surge brakes) but when I start moving a get there is a pop coming from the hitch almost as if there is some slack in the hitch. When I look at it while not moving there i no movement or play?

Sounds like the surge brake actuator moving back to where it sets while moving forward. When you stop it moves forward and activates the brakes.

make sure you are using the proper ball for the hitch. a 1 7/8 ball will pull a 2 inch hitch, but may come off, etc.

As stated, make sure you have the proper ball for your trailer, but the sounds you mention is common with surge brakes and is telling you the actuator is moving as intended.

Some couplers have a shock that absorbs some of the thumping, check it to make sure it is not worn out.
