My wife and I fished our first Bass tournament today, and we caught six Pickerel. Oh well, we had fun anyway.

Noticed that they just let all of the Bass go right there at the dock after the weigh in. Will those Bass return to where ever they were caught, or will they make a new home in the new area of the lake?

My two new bait casters are awsome. I was totally comfortable with them first time out. Not only comfortable, but I prefer them now to my spinning reels. I've been using spinning reels for 25 years. I didn't think the transition would be this quick.

Re: First Tournament

I've been wondering about that myself. The fish we caught over the weekend were released more than 15 miles from where they were caught. They would have to go five miles downstream and then 10 miles up river to be even close to home.
Just wondering the same...if they stay there or head back?
BTW, How'd you fare this weekend Ron?

Re: First Tournament

I was reading an article awhile back, they put radio tags on fish after a weigh in and kept up with them all week long they moved miles heading back were they were origially caught .I caught a bass 2 years ago that was blind in one eye and had a cunck out of its back that was healed i weighed it in that night and a month later i caught it again in the same area as the first time it swam 5 miles back.Brownie i snuck off saturday for 3 hrs, started off after crappie but the lake was full of crappie fishermen i fished about an hr for them, then tirned to bass had 4 keepers and 5 non keepers on a worm and bitsy jig,all buck bass starting to make beds i presume,i fished a tapering bank with grass close to the shore, the fish was on the grass edge and the wind was blowing into it.Glad the storms did'nt get ya.

Are we talking dark or just in the evening? If dark, what are you gonna throw? Bad time of the year for a night time tourney!

Rouge might be an option Ron...

Where I'm at the bass are moving up and down throughout the day.... That may change with a warm week however...

I'm going out with a Rouge, spinnerbait, Jig/Craw, Worm, and possibly a swim bait... Seriously considering a Banjo, for some of those deep bass if nothing else works... LOL!!!!

Re: First Tournament

I'm fishing another tournament this Saturday. It's supposed to be about 40 degrees and raining. Any lure suggestions?

Re: First Tournament

depends on water temp. below 50= suspending jerkbait (jerk with long pause),medium to deep diving crankbait(work slowly). If above 50 throw a rattle trap into the mix. Spinnerbait in shallow grass, brush, wood cover should produce if they had moved up. Good luck.

Re: First Tournament

Fished the 50 degree water last week. Fish were in a transition area on the edge of a deep channel, managed three nice bass on tubes , dragging it down the edge. Our local tourny on sunday was similar conditions. Some nice bags brought to the scales.

Thouhgt you guy might like to see some photos from the tourny. All fish pictured are smallies except the one LM . That went 6.5

Man, ya gotta love smallies of that size.

People dont often think about Oregon as being a great smallmouth fishery, or Largemouth for that matter, but the Willamet and the Umpqua have a huge population of Smallies. I never target them, but I think that may change this year.
