I dont feel this is an engine topic but if im wrong please move it.....

So i finally got the boat in the water today.

Was going to go over the weekend but when i tried to start the boat it would stall immediately and would not idle. This was covered in another post.

The boat shop which did work which i also used to the first time this year charged me almost $400 to rebuild the carb because they said that was the source of my bogging down issue.

Well after the rebuild like i said, the boat wouldn't even idle. I took it back to the guy who ive always had work on my boat and he checked it out, there was no fuel in the bowl, just wasnt getting any. The float needed to be adjusted, the shop said they rebuilt, tuned and ran it up, dont see how as it clearly wouldn't run at all at this point. We also replaces the anti siphon valve and replaced the fuel lines, he fixed the float switch check my gas and changed the screen that was in the tank itself, ran great.

Most of this is back story, so finally me and my buddy put her in the water today to test it all out, at first its all good, ran her open wide for the first time in a long time, no blog, no stall.

Then suddenly there was a weird noise, sounded alot like belts, but wasnt, or was but was being caused by something else?

It seemed rough but no the engine, not really sure what it was i kept the boat going slow just seeing whats what, then it stalled. I tried to put it in neutral to restart but it wouldn't go into neutral, the prop was locked up. Now i must add that i saw the prop wobbling a bit at the shop but they said it was fine....

Finally somehow i got it back to neutral and started her up, i could put it in gear and put and it seemed fine but given her any gas and the sqeak like belts sound came up and it would seem like it were running rough, again not the engine itself but the outdrive?

Called the mechanic and he is concerned maybe the drained the fluid to change it but forgot or maybe its a bearing or who knows but this is issue number after this shop winterized, re-commissioned and rebuilt the carb. The boat just came back from them with more issue then it went to them with. Now i limped back to the ramp got the back home and even spinning the prop by hand seems harder then it should be. Something is going on in there. My mechanic friend will be by in the next few days to see what the deal is but meantime im going nuts here wondering.

Based on what i have said, you guys have any ideas?

its a 17 foot larson with a volvo penta 3.0GS

Like i said the engine is finally running great, she puured the whole back back at headway speed but seemed like giving her any more power made the prop shake to much and cause issues, at least from a laymans point of view that's what was going on.

Oh just to get it out of the way no, i have not hit anything, the prop appears bran new....

My other concenr is also why the sudden stalls, my theory is when the prop lock up it caused the engine to die, possible?

Im having the guy i trust be the one to check it out and fix it, i will call the shop with my findings and give them an ear full but im not taking it back to them, even if the SHOULD fix it, i no longer trust their work.

Sorry to hear about your issue. Looks like you found another shop which is in name only and have no one which has any talent. I would pull the prop and see if the issue is the shaft or the prop.

ok well i figured out what the issue is...

So i went outside a little while ago and saw a little drip drip of water coming off the outdrive, so upon inspection i found the drain screw on the lower unit was the source, so go to touch it with my finger and it wiggles a bit, it wasn't even screwed tight, not to mention it was visibly unscrewed. I cant believe it, so i checked my invoice and when the winterized it they did in fact change my gear oil. So someone didnt tighten it properly and it all drained out.....

So my friend is telling me this is bad news bears, the outdrive needs to be replaced or rebuilt.

So now i get to have this battle with the boat yard on how we are gonna fix this...

Yes. They are responsible.

For the future, you probably should learn how to check the gear oil level. I always check mine the night before I take the boat out.

I had a Volvo-drive do that.My fault tho. It did lock-up more than once trying to get back to the dock. Once back at the shop I remembered it had no gear-oil in it from winterizing....I flushed it several times until the fluid ran clear and was not silver any longer, re-filled it. It was a little more noisy but ran for 5 years after that until I sold it.
