I did search for this, i have a 1990 keywest 1700 boat. I am now replacing the fish finder. I have looked at a few systems. i would like to keep it under 200. I would love to have speed and temp. but would like a unit that included all stuff to mount, IE mounting brackets, transducers, wiring and all. i would like to keep it as simple as possible, and still be a good machine.

Have a look at NAVMAN. I have a 4150 model which has speed & temp. plus a whole lot more. They are good quality and good value.

Greg ;)

Couldn't agree more with Greg.

The 4150sx has - Temp (programmable alarm, history & graph), speed, trip log, low batt alarm, voltage display. The 4150 also can be networked with any other navman toy so that the 4150 becomes a display for anything else such as wind speed, rudder angle, auto pilot etc.etc.

Aldo

Re: Fish finder....AGAIN

My opinion, three most important things in a fishfinder:
resolution, resolution and resolution.

I got this one for Christmas and I highly recommend it:

Eagle Fishmark 320

I can only speak for freshwater application, though.

$150 includes temp, speed sensor is extra.

320 x 320 pixels, vs 160 x 120 with the NAVMAN.

Furuno SL4100. For the money it's the best fish finder made in the world - and its not very much money.

By the way, I have been called a "Furunonazi". They really do make the very best fish finders.

Thom

Well, do these come with the transducer that you mount out side the boat. i would love speed but if it is going to be a pain to wire every thing up then i dont know. I dont know anything about these things. so do mosts of these come with every thing needed for installition and all.

Yes, it all comes in the package. The Eagle I mentioned has a transducer that can be mounted on the transom or in the hull but if you want water temp you have to put it on the transom. Took me about 15 minutes. The speed sensor would be another device to mount. Then you have to mount the monitor & hook up the wires. Might sound like a lot of trouble but don't be intimidated; it's really not difficult.

Re: Fish finder....AGAIN

The sensing part is called the transducer. Virtually all small fish finders are sold as package deals with everything you need except water and a power source. Tools are required though.

Transducers come in three styles. These are the Thru-Hull, in which the transducer itself resides outside the hull, in the water, and its stem passes through the hull where it delvers the data cable to the display unit. The second sort is the transom mounted version. With this one a bracket is screwed to the back of the boat and the transducer held in it. Adjustments for angle and height can be made with the bracket to dial it in. The third mounting method is called In-Hull. With these the transducer is either held in close contact with the hull with an adhesive or the transducer is suspended inside of a tank that is sealed to the hull and filled with liquid.

In all three mounting styles for any given fish finder what you get is really the same transducer, just a different way to hold it in the boat.

Of the three styles the Thru-hull is the most efficient, followed by the In-Hull, and then the Transom-Mount. Of the three the Transom mount is the most popular, the in-hull comes in second, and Thru-hulls are least commonly found.

Take your pick.

Thom

Re: Fish finder....AGAIN

Nice info here on the units. I looked at the stats on the NAVMAN units. They gotta be good. I noticed they have "SBN" technology.

Can someone exlain the frequency and which does what? example 200hz, 50/200hz, etc.

Sorry, got another question. The in hull transducer, does the hull have to be flat? I was wondering that since most boats are "V" bottoms.

I'm interested in the "in hull" transducer since it would allow me to put it into my shower pan in the head. This would be the shortest way to route my wiring to the bridge. Would that location work or would water have to be left in the shower pan? (bottom of the shower pan is the hull of the boat)

Thanks......SS

Didn't mean to hijack your thread.

Re: Fish finder....AGAIN

you can put it inside a v-hull, but it has to be parallel with the waterline to give an accurate depth reading (distance from 'ducer to bottom).

there just can't be any air between the 'ducer and the water; in-hull placements are usually done with epoxy, taking care not to let it dry with any air bubbles. the sonar can hear through plastic, fiberglass, epoxy, water, but not aluminum, wood, air, floatation foam. if it's a composite hull with a porous layer of some kind might not work. also if your head is out of the water when the boat's on plane it won't give you a reading.

also you can't get water temp if it's not in the water!

Re: Fish finder....AGAIN

Heeheee, my boat on plane? Oh how would that be nice. Jus jokin, boat is just too underpowered to get up on plane. Thats another story by itself.

Thanks JT. There is enough room in the heads shower pan that I can epoxy it to the very bottom of the V.
