My fish finder cut out on me yesterday and when I went to turn it on it started loading and then cut out. It did this several times. When I got into calmer water it started up no problem. Any ideas? I'm thinking maybe a lose connection.

Loose or dirty connections can do that. Also high voltage will cause it to shut down. Monitor your charging voltage.

If it's a Garmin, check the power connector on the rear of the unit. They are known to crack causing the problem you mention

mine does that at the paddle clip to the power block under the dash. Your comment that it works on smooth water is the key.

Goop it up with dielectric grease and all other connects as well, including the plug and line fuse if you have one.

Also be sure your battery ground is pliers tight. the wingnut is just a rotten trick to make you think you can tighten it enough manually.

It ended up being a buggy fuse holder. It was old and replaced it this morning and everything was fine. I had to use a 16 guage because that's all I had, but seems to work ok.
