Hi, I just got my first boat today and I'm a complete newbie when it comes to boating, so here goes one of the many questions I'm sure I'm going to have for the forum.
The boat came with an Apelco XCD 300 fish finder that has seen better days, the screen on it is all but toast, it does work, but with the condition of the screen, it's extremely hard to read. I'm not really into fishing, more cruising then anything, but would like to have something that will give me depth readings, which this Apelco does, so I'm guessing that the transducer is working.
I want to replace the head unit with out going to the time and expense of replacing the transducer and wiring, I looked on e-bay for another head unit but the one I have must be really old or something as I can't find another one like it.
The transducer coupling socket on the back of the fish finder is an 8 pin round screw on type, is this something standard with fish finders? Can I go to another brand as long as it has the 8 pin round screw on coupling on the back and expect it to work with the transducer I already have installed in the boat?
I want to replace the one I have, but I'm not sure what will work and what won't, or better said, I'm not sure what I can get away with and what I can't
Thanks for reading, and I hope these questions don't sound to dumb.
