Fishfinder/Depthfinder not working properly

I recently installed a new fish/depth finder. The transducer is mounted on the transom. The depth has been reading in the 30-35 feet area since I installed. I have been on two different lakes and neither are that deep. The readings do change but not as much as it should. It does not matter whether cruising at 40 mph or sitting in the lake with engine off. Does it have something to do with the level of the transducer itself? The unit is a Garmin Echo. Any ideas?
Thank ins advance.

Is the transducer install as per instructions?

it is. Should I try messing with the level on the transducer?

The transducer should be mounted with about 1/2 below the hull and pointed straight down.
When sitting still it does not really mater how low the transducer is. When moving at planing speed then the transducer needs to be fine tuned.

Are you sure your unit is not in demo mode?
Have you tried auto depth and auto sensitivy?
Many units you need to tell what transducer is installed.

It must be just that. I will check the manual and check into that.

Re: Fishfinder/Depthfinder not working properly

Took the boat out this weekend with the manual and still cannot get the proper depth readings. I am going to call Garmin today and see what the deal is. Any other suggestions??? Thanks.

Either the unit and or the transducer are bad.

You will have a lot more clutter on the screen but you should be able get a reading off the ground while sitting in your drive way. If you can't do that, one or both components bad or installed incorrectly

After a few calls to Garmin, we did realize it was in demo mode. Simple fix! LOL
