Hi everyone.
I've a 90's 3 cylinder 60hp Mariner engine. The overheat warning in hte remote box is not very loud. I'd like to fit a temperature guage by the speedo/rev counter. Is there an aftermarket kit, I mean, i a car I'd just get a generic sensor and jubilee clip it inside a water hose?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Howard

Re: Fitting a temperature sensor/guage

Outboards run much cooler than a car so the sensors are different and there are several types. The gauge and sensor are available from Teleflex or Faria to name just two. The sensor and gauge must be compatible with each other. Make certain you understand what you are measuring. Some sensors mount on a bracket and the sensor itself touches the cylinder head or water cover. Those sensors are measuring head/cover temperature. The closer the sensor is to the spark plug the higher it will read. If you have a sensor that screws into a threaded hole in the water cover and extends into the water, that would be measuring water temperature. Thermocouple sensors sit under a spark plug. Those also register cylinder head temperature. Know what you are buying and when installed, understand what the gauge is telling you. Water temperature and cylinder head temperature are not the same although at times they can come fairly close.
