I did a search and did not find anything about this, so I figured it would be a plus to someone to write it up.

my 1983 15hp had a bad case of the slipping gears on the tiller and it was very difficult to move the throttle. I wanted to share what I found out while attempting to fix it. I am not sure how long my fix is going to last, but it was very easy to do, and if the rubber ring made from spare fuel hose fails or gets hard, very cheap and easy to do again.

the part numbers i will be referencing are found here
http://www.boats.net/parts/search/B...MODELS,15 ELECT START & "A" MODELS/parts.html

1st off all parts removed and cleaned (very important as old grease and dirt really makes it difficult to move parts)

what I did was take part #66 (this is the rod with the gear at the end of it)out of the tiller part # 57 (this is the housing for the tiller). I then took a small piece of 3/8" fuel lined about 3/16" thick basically a rubber washer and pushed it all the way up the shaft to the gear, then I reassembled the tiller and found that I had removed the slop and play that allowed the gears to ride over each other instead of meshing properly. It still allows you to move the tiller up and down as needed. originally I did not bother replacing the snap ring that retains the rod as it is also held in place by the screw that holds the twist grip onto the rod. However after considering it for a short while I marked the shaft with a scribe placed it in my lathe and turned a new groove for the snap ring to go into.

Most people that have motors with the ball gear on the tiller have experienced the occasional, to chronic loose engagement, and I just wanted to pass on to you my fix. The result of cleaning the old grease and dirt was easier movement and less fatigue on my part, the tightening of the gears was icing on the cake for me.

Hope this is of some value to someone.

I'd have to cut the grove with a hacksaw blade. My Grand father was a machinist but none of his talent rubbed off on me. To bad. A pic. would be nice. Rick.
