my merc 50 didnt idle, i stipped the carbs and found that and idle jet had a crack the whole way down, i replaced it and viola it's fixed,

one question tho, the remote controller is easy to put in forward gear but hard to pull back, the cables are free, the remote is free, could it be the little can that locks the motor down when in reverse or somthing else?.

Re: fixed it

it's always nice when people post the outcome
of advice received.... as for the throttle cable,
sounds like it's time to replace it. you don't want
to take a chance of it getting stuck wide
open when you're heading for the dock
a brand new one cost me $30 bucks.
good luck,
M.Y.

Re: fixed it

This topic was up a little time ago

Before you break off anything, do a systematic search for the fault:

Disconnect the cable from the motor. Then check the motor's linkage for free and smooth movement. Check if the linkage allows the throttle to open completely when it reaches the stop point.

Next (still with disconnected cables) check the remote same way. Check for free play on the lever before the cables start to move. There may be an adjustable friction screw on the remote to prevent the throttle from going back to idle while running (on a well working remote the spring on the motor end actually can pull the cable & lever back). Check for such friction adjustment.
