Hey guys,

I have a '96 Dodge 2500 Club Cab diesel.

The truck came with power side windows. The passenger window quit without warning (in the up position).

Neither switch (driver or passenger) will move the window. Both switches, when actuated in the 'up' direction will make a clicking sound from within the passenger door. No sound when actuated in the 'down' direction.

I'm at a complete loss.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thank you,

KRS

start with getting a new switch for the passenger door, it is the easiest place to start.

Buying a new switch is the easiest?

Both switches make the door 'click'. I have a hard time thinking a new switch will fix that; both switches wouldn't fail at the same time. Am I seeing this wrong?

I would suspect the motor. Open the door panel and get a multi meter on the motor leads. You also might try to hot wire the motor to make sure it is working. It would be rare for both switches to die.

There may be a simple piece of dirt jamming the motor or hit up a junk yard for another one. Heck a brand new one is about $45

Really!??!!!!

Okay, I'm headed to the dump and I'll check the motor leads this afternoon (this is Southern Arizona and it's already HOT).

I would check the wiring in the door jam between the main body and the door.
When i worked at dodge it was always the first place we looked as it was a common place to fail. Just move the wires as you push on the switch and see if the window try's to move.

take it apart and see if your getting 12v+ at the motor when you hit the switch. If your not start back tracing.

Okay, jumped the motor, works fine up and down (just reverse + and - on the test leads).

Up from there is the harness which plugs into the switch. I can't find any diagrams for the switch... but it doesn't seem right. The switch has 5 leads.

The center is hot.

The other 4 are:
Purple
Purple/Wht
Brown
Brown/Wht

These appear to be as follows:
Purple & Brown go directly to the motor.
Purp/Wht and Brn/Wht must be the input from the driver's side.

So, I OHM tested the switch. I think it should be zero from the center to any of the four outside leads until one of the switches is activated. However, it isn't. Two of the leads measure. As I'm sitting here typing I realize that I don't understand OHMs as well as I would like and I need to continuity test the switch.

Thoughts?

The click you hear and no motor operation tends to be a ground problem ...to ohm test a switch it cannot have the centre 12 volt power connected....if your talking rear door switches they are reverse wiring from fronts...so ohm test between the switch leads with 12 volt power lead pulled off also check the motor ground is good

If the master switch on the drivers door goes bad, the switch on the passenger door wont work either. I just had to do this on a customers car 2 weeks ago.

Fixed:

I have been testing and fooling with this for days.

I had the switches off of the harnesses. So, I finally took apart the switches. The inside was copper (or similar) pieces with contacts. The passenger contacts were a little black, so I sneaked in an emery cloth and cleaned them up and them sprayed electrical contract & switch cleaner in the contacts. Blew it out, replaced it, and tried the switch expecting to watch the window go down...... it didn't.

I took apart the driver's side switch and the little contacts were burned white. I scrubbed them, cleaned them........... AND IT WORKED!

I'll get a new driver's switch when I have some $$$.

Thought you all might like to know the fix.

Congratulations! It's a great feeling to be able to figure out a problem and fix it on your own, and save lots of money in the process. :)
